Hi Albert, thanks for the remarks. Taking another look at it, I realize that I also cut off a sliver of the shadow of the bird on the right. I agree, opening the frame up a bit would better balance the image. Kind of a compromise between Thorro's suggestion and your might be the ideal. |

Hi Thorro, I need to ask Google what a classic "S" curve would be hahaha. For this one I toned down blacks and shadows because there was more than sufficient light, and the Stilts are very white and very black (some have a lovely brown instead of black), so there was already enough contrast in that department. I then manipulate highlights to take a bit of the white and try to bring out some texture. In doing so, it brought a overall brightness to the image that I thought was well balanced. Again, you have a great eye for narrative. As you can see from the original, I wasn't trying to get both birds. I was actually just focused on the one on the left. Did you do a 16:9 crop ratio on your edit? Honestly, if I was try to sell the image, I would try to both edits. The encroachment on territory is a relatable and familiar image that would resonate with an audience. The same with a showdown. |

Thanks for the feedback Jim. I'm trying to work on multi-tasking while shooting; paying a bit more attention to moving through settings while going from different subjects, different distances and varying numbers of subjects. There are usually 8-12 different bird species at this location so it is a good place to practice. |

Hi Jeffery, I'm a little confused as to why the sharpness of this submission is noticeably off compared to the original. The body of the bird is spot on. I think you found the culprit when it comes to got getting the wing tips. I'm thinking that f/7 is responsible. I was shooting smaller birds prior. Didn't make the adjustment. |

Hi Sophia, sorry I missed the deadline to offer any suggestions before your submission date. I Thorro got to the main points. The only suggestion that comes to mind would be to bright down the intensity of light coming through the window. But in doing so, I wouldn't want the overall image to get darker. The reason I would suggest this is because I see the chair as the central subject and would try to focus on it. Outside of that, I love the image. I love the colors and textures you captured. There is an oil painting quality to it that I find immersive and highly narrative. |

Hi Jeffrey, what a magnificent bird. Seems to be a chimera of a few different birds. The direction you went in post-processing brings the image to life. In terms of the crop, I feel like I want to see it within the vastness of the landscape. Maybe just trimming the top off below the horizon. It might also help in showing the size of this bird. The viewer would have some reference points to estimate proportions. Just a suggestion, maybe it doesn't work as I see it in my head :) |

Hi Thorro,
I appreciate the comments. No disagreement with the edits that you have made, although I feel that it creates a different feel to the image. Sadly, I'm not happy with the clarity and sharpness of the submitted image. The one that I rendered is sharp on the eye, head, neck and body area with a slight blur at the outer parts of the wings. With the shutter speed used, it just shows how incredibly fast and powerful the gull's wing movement is. For me, keeping that is part of the energy trapped within the image. But again, this is just a matter of preference. |
