Michael, I like both versions of the photograph. The negative space is nice and in the second version, the penguin really just stands out. I also read with interest your comments about perspective....the view of the artist and that of the audience. I struggle with that myself! One of my teachers advised me to treat my photographs as art and I am the artist. Some will like and some will not and that is ok, it is my art. Her words have really helped me as I develop my skills and style. |

Hi Michael, thank you for your feedback. You and others have indicated the blade in the front is a distraction. I like how it frames the colors. As to your discussion regarding removing the distractions.... I could have easily moved the blade behind the subject. I was at a public park and this was in a large planter within a plaza area. I have done such a thing when I am in my own backyard! I have to admit, it didn't occur to me to do that in the park but I don't see why not. I am not sure what the "rules" are if one is going to submit an image in competition though (not that I intend to do that with this image). I don't think I would cut a distraction out of the way unless it was in my own garden and it needed to be pruned! I am curious as to others opinions on this as well. Thank you for bringing it up! |

LuAnn, another great still life photograph. The lighting on the apples really brings out the colors and details of the fruit. I think the colors of the travertine stone enhance the photograph as there is some green in both the stone and the apples. I do not find it distracting at all. |

Lisa, I am intrigued by street photography and want to do more of it. It is quite the skill in not only photography but with people! This photograph definitely tells a story. I sense the man is very proud and happy to have his photograph taken. My only suggestion is the same as LuAnn's in that it seems a bit too bright. |

Thank you for your comments, Ruth. I did wonder about the top grass blade. I took a few of these at different angles so I will have to go back and see if I have another option to work with. |

Thank you for the suggestions, LuAnn. I did go back and do some more editing with the patch tool....it seems I just stopped too soon. I did look up some tutorials on the brush tool as well but I welcome your references on that technique. |

Kieu-Hanh, You have captured an interesting insect. I don't know what it is either. I like the colorful flowers and the angle of the shot with parts of the insect on the flower. I do find the insect blurry though. You may want to try some sharpening. Let us know if you find out what it is! |

Ruth, You have really captured a great image of this deer. The deer fills the frame and it is very sharp. And, there is a glint in his eye! I see the tail is close to the edge but I do not see it as a negative as there is enough space on the right so I feel that he just walked into the frame. Lovely image! |

Hi Michael, What a great pose this penguin did for you! These unexpected opportunities are always the best images. I really like how the edge of the grassy area and the rock lead the eye right to the penguin. The yellow color on the penguin also lead right into the pose. My only suggestion is to take down some more of the brightness in the water behind the penguin a bit. I really enjoy taking and viewing wild life photos and this one is very special! |

Karl, I appreciate your comments. This shot was hand held and that lens gets heavy! I agree that Cindy's version is good. |

Karl, this is a very nice reflection image. I like how you have filled the frame with the headlamp and the tones are nice. You actually have the awning reflection twice as it appears again in the lower section. Very good eye and capture. |

Paul, I agree that this is a great example of the use of negative space. The lines in the image work well in leading the eye into it and the sail boat adds balance. Very nice. |

Lorna, I like all the textures and shapes in this image. I also like the angle in which it was taken as it makes it interesting. My only suggestion is to bring down the brightness a bit. |

Chuck, this color image really turned into a nice black and white with all the tones and details within the field. I like your cropped version. My eye does go to the brightest cat tail there in the front so it might help to just take down the brightness of that one a bit. |

Cindy, this is a lovely image in that the stairs lead right into it and nice tones. I like your sky replacement as the clouds and darkening sky add some drama. It makes me want to walk up those steps and into the house. Very nice image. |

Cindy, thank you for your comments and edit. I do like the high key effect and the crop on the left takes the bird out of the center. |
