LOL. You are absolutely right re the flipped version drawing the eye better to the wave but, to someone who has been to this spot, it looks totally wrong. Thanks much for your suggestions |

What a stunning moment to capture and the evening light was a brilliant decision. I think the placement on the sticky bush adds nicely to the story. I might have tried to clone out the one main stick across the legs of heron on left but I totally understand your thinking. I would be ever so happy to have caught this moment. My only wish here is that you would have brought the exposure down a bit in camera so none of the whites were blown out even if it meant adding noise when bringing up the shadows in post. Personally I always struggle with birds that have both dark and white to get the right exposure…especially in the drama of the moment! |

I love the contrasting colors and how nicely they pop. The focus on the front leg and little hairs of grass is exquisite. To my eye the face is just the tiniest bit soft but I sure know how tiny the dof is with macro shots. ANd focus stacking doesn't work with creepy crawlies! I am totally impressed with your use of flash. My only suggestion is re the radial gradient. To me the whites just by his eyes and behind are a bit gray and the blacks just the tiniest bit towards gray. I know, I am being really picky but I can't find anything else to suggest! So, re the gradient filter, one way I might think to do it is to do it in PS with layers so that you could bring down the speculative highlights on the shiny black but leave the whites white and bring the blacks down a bit |
