Very kind of you Debbie. Have you been to Bryce since you've been a photographer? If not, start planning it now. Mind blowing. |

Hey Barbara. I've thought about this image a fair amount really. I think the impression I get is a) that the lighting conditions on the subject (from the right) and the lighting conditions on the background just appear to be subtly different. That kind of nags my brain in a way that's really kind of hard to articulate. And b) that the super sharp cutout of the subject onto the background seems a touch unnatural.
I think you can fix that by using a brush with a very soft feather to subtly blend the edges of the subject onto the background. I've done stuff like this, and if you do it right, it can work. In fact, I've attached an image that I shot for a commercial shoot in which I did exactly what I'm talking about. The subject I shot in studio. The background I got off the internet, but shot with a camera, out of focus. See what I mean?
I think you're onto something though. I'd urge you to try the technique again on something. |

The need to move around in order to a) get the right composition, b) manage the background, c) create interesting compositions, d) a bunch of other reasons, is a MAJOR lesson Anne. I think we all have a tendency to shoot from eye height, but changing position up and down, and then all over can be a GIANT advantage. With that under your belt, you're unstoppable (but we already knew that). ;) |

That's incredibly encouraging Barbara. Thank you so much. I'm not really a landscape guy, so compliments like this are heartwarming to hear. Thanks tons. Now if I can just pull if off again this year sometime. ;) |

It's an attractive image and I can understand why it grabbed your eye. It's sharp where it needs to be, but DoF allows the focus to fall off into the image. Good job being on your toes. Great arcs everywhere.
I'd like to remove that wall outlet. Kind of inconvenient isn't it? |

Everything looks sharp to me Rita. Exposure is well done all around. Colors are super vibrant, and the green/ purple complementary color harmony really works. I like the haze, which for me adds depth to the image.
This is just me talkin', but I don't think the structures at the edge of the field, or the flags, help the image. Fortunately, I think they're all removable with a little Ps magic.
Just my thoughts, but I'd kind of like to see the foreground figure a bit more prominently. There's just so much texture and color in there. |

I'm going to have to vote for the uncrossed image Anne. I think the subject is in focus, and the depth of field works, which is extra-challenging with macro/ closeup shots. Exposure is done well, I think, despite the dark shadows created by the direct sunlight, and large dynamic range of the image. I think the black/yellow color combination is striking.
The obscuration of the subject by the intervening plant in the foreground does detract, but I don't think it's fatal. I'd like to have something head on to the insect, but achieving that can be nearly impossible (if I had $1 for every bee butt image I've snapped, I'd be a rich man). The wings appear to have some motion blur, but eliminating that is another thing that could be impossible to achieve. At 250 wing beats per second, there is not a shutter made that can freeze a bee.
With regard to the cropped image, I think that it appears overworked a bit. Specifically, it seems overly sharpened. Anyway, just my thoughts. |

Thanks Dean. Very kind. If you haven't been to Bryce Canyon in a while, I recommend a trip. If you can't get good images there, you can't get good images. |

Thanks Rita. I wasn't aiming for anything vertigo-inducing, but I was trying to recreate the scene as I saw it. These amphitheaters create such an interesting scene, I just had to capture it. |

Hi Barbara. Subject is crisp, and well exposed as far as I can see. Great color harmony. Nice composition as well, IMHO. I too like the nice creamy background.
Speaking of the background, I have this impression that this is a composited image. No? I could be wrong, but I just can't shake the feeling that the flower was selected and placed on that background. Maybe I'm crazy, and it's an attractive image regardless, so if I'm wrong, just disregard. |
