Good input Jane. I'll tell ya, cropping these images has been a real challenge and one frequently addressed by other critiquers too, but not always the same issue. I think folks generally like a looser crop, however, there's a very fine line between not crowding the subject, and creating dead space, and I don't know exactly what that line is or how to tell if I've crossed it. It's one of those indefinables I think. Also, I can't help feel that you lose visual impact when you fail to fill the frame with the subject, particularly when you're talking about a portrait aspect, because you lose resolution and detail. Maybe that's just the price ya gotta pay. You know, when I cropped this the way I did, I decided to crowd the right, in order to allow the mass of the arrangement to be on the left. I guess you could say that I tried to put the visual center of gravity in the center. But, if that's giving you the heebie jeebies, maybe another answer is in order. |

Hey Jane, looks like it's just you and me, which is too bad because this is a knockout IMHO. Man O Man. Razor sharp to my eye. The composition and that scraggly tree are just...serendipitous. I'm not kidding. The animal's posture is excellent and evocative to me. Light is fabulous in color and direction as far as I can see. I can tell there was some artificiality in the cloud texture, but it doesn't detract at all IMHO.
This is one of those times, IMHO, when you need to break a rule. You've very carefully put the animals very sharp eye right where most folks would tell you it needs to be, in the upper left crashpoint. But, I think that puts too much dead space above the bird. Don't crop up whatever you do. Just crop down, and put the crash point right on that little nub, just in front of the bird's foot. Is there a bit more space to the right? One last thing, brighten that bit of dark branch which is easy to do. In my humble opinion, this image is a 4+ already, and with those tiny tweaks, is merit award fodder. Congrats. You deserve it here.
