Well I think I should retrieve my question. Yesterday in our camera club, we had a competition of architectural images and an image similar to yours got the 3rd place among 57 images. |

Thanks for your suggestions. I had left part of the top overhang in the image as I feel it provides some balance. |

Agree with you that following by the suggested rules one can produce a standard acceptable image that however may lack in imagination. One question will this be scored lower in a competition? |

Meerkats are very interesting and active creatures often seen in small groups standing alert and monitoring their surroundings. I think this must have been sitting still for a while as you have captured quite a sharp image with focus straight on the eye. With Larry's adjustments the viewer's attention goes straight to the main subject and stay there. |

I like the colors in the fungi and against the darker tree trunk they do stand out. I find good detail and clarity in the image. I personally like the colored version than the monochrome as suggested by Pat.
Darkening and reversing does help. Still I think by making the background completely blurred, in fact draws more attention to it. Perhaps taking the shot from a different angle this could have been avoided.

A beautifully captured image. Above everything I like the mood and the composition in the image that is captured in good composition and has fine details. I like Larry's comment about our inability to see some flaws in our own images due to a strong personal connection with them. His adjustments do make the cats stand out much more against the background. |

The bright colors and the panoramic format is the central attraction in this image. I also think each kid looking in different direction looks more natural and adds interest.
Adding a little more on top is a good idea as I feel the crop does appear a bit too tight. |

Indeed a simple, bright and beautiful image with good clarity and color harmony. Including some branches of the tree gives added visual impact.
I think when to stick by the rules and when to break them is a photographer's personal choice. Perhaps Larry can tell us his, with reference to this image.
