Hi Brenda,
I have dallied with feedback for your photograph for weeks now.
I have thought about the central focus ... it's position, the colour, texture and the story etc.
I remain a little unsure to interpret it.
The original photograph is lovely, soft focus with golden textures and a centrally placed lantern. There is a centre of interest, but it leaves me looking for the story. A flame? ... a stray leaf?
You have a superb base, but I would love to see something more to the image.

I love this shot too. Decisions, decisions.
If I have to choose, I would go with Jason's B&W version with the crisper lines. |

I love this shot. Gorgeous (wish I was there!)
I'm with Mitch ... a twitch to the right will do it. Lovely |

I am impressed with this one too Terry. Like Mitch, I am not sure I can suggest much. Perhaps a little more grit in the b&W. Personal preference, I know ..... just a thought. |

Wow guys,
I have taken so much away from all of your suggestions.
In the end I have taken on a blend of good advice from you all.
I prefer the final here. Thanks guys. I'll enter it into my next international competition and let you know how it goes!
Thanks so much! |

Hi Jason.
Interesting that you used a composite.
The only feedback I can suggest is, to keep you original composition, but 'disappear' the two bits of leaves at the top and the distracting stalk on the left (Fill -> content aware perhaps?).
I would also suggest including the left part of the lily petal and the bottom of the green leaf, if you have them in the originals? |

Hi Mitch
What an amazing opportunity you've had to capture an orca. Wonderful capture too!
I agree with Jason about the flip. Personally, it sits better for me placing the orca to the left.
I also like the colours and textures in the cliff face.
Composition-wise, I find that including more of the cliff face complies a little more with the rule of thirds.
What do you think? |

Hi Jason.
Thanks so much for your feedback. I was indeed endeavouring to get that minimalistic look. But, there was something that bothered me about the image.
Flip it horizontally!
That's what was bugging me! Thanks so much for that. I can't believe it! I listened to a presentation from a PSA guy on Zoom recently. He discussed flipping horizontally in nature photography. I flipped things for quite a few weeks and said to myself that I'd store that gem away in my head. Well, you have reminded me again. I obviously have a memory like a sieve!
Thanks. |
