79 Nov 22 Comment Karl, this seems to me to be a fascinating illustration of an unusual lens: I think that the bubble effect is immediately arresting. My only thought, and I have to struggle to find one here, is that I wonder if there are other useful opportunities within if the bubble were not the goal of the crop. Nov 13th
79 Nov 22 Comment I see this as a celebration of color enhanced by the texture of the threads. I did a little playing myself and the outcome was merely a personal relationship with color - except that I do suggest that the left and right borders of your original might be worth keeping - an available vertical border adding emphasis to the threads' flow Nov 13th
79 Nov 22 Comment Peter - fun to play - I like the idea.
The brightness on the horizon works well to signal a dawn for me - and the texture is distinctive.
For my taste I would enjoy a little more variation in the tone and color - and to that end I make two suggestions: 1) crop a little off the bottom, I think it is a little off balance with the rest; 2) I added a B&W filter in photoshop and blended it with luminosity - this lets one to add emphasis/light as a function of color.

I feel that the image finishing works very well with its high contrast and distinctive style - I think you could anchor a portfolio of your bed-side images by retaining that processing. In this case I particularly like the shadow of the mouth tube with its sharp lines combing with patches of reflected (refracted?) light. The clarity of the plastic (for instance the seam on the side's center) makes the image completely tangible to me.
I thing I would prefer, on the left, a little more - so as not to cut off the mouth piece.

79 Nov 22 Comment Lauren - I think that the center is extremely rich in color and that you have captured a wonderful palette to explore. My instinct would be to focus on that rather than worry about context.
Suggestions? Well I got quite excited by the options and using Nik software I played in Color Effex and Silver Effex and even combined the two just to see where it could take me.

99 Nov 22 Reply Linda - thank you - I agree this does effect some of the contrast that my original B&W was lacking - and includes some of Barbara's emphasis on the gates Nov 12th
99 Nov 22 Reply Thank you - a little dark for me on the right but I like the emphasis on the gates Nov 12th

Oh, it is good
My preference is the first - though my reaction was: gosh that's cute, rather than: run away run away. My first impression was of a shaggy puppy.
I prefer the higher contrast (no surprise) and I also would suggest that the first image does include negative space off to the upper right - and I think that, being where the space is, helps to infer motion as the creature seems to me to be moving into that emptiness.
I almost see a virtual vertical line in the center of the image between the creature and its shadow and although they have very different weight, I think this gives a useful balance to the composition.
Finally, I like the unsolid border because I see resonance in it with the delicate lines in the creature.

This is an amazing shot - I have no idea how you achieved the focus on this moving object; I understand that the shutter speed freezes the motion - but how did you get the distance focus so precise?
I like the way you have the lower wing close to the diagonal of the image.
Since your detail is so clear, I think that personally I would cut closer to show it off. The following would be my instinct, shown with a little more contrast found in Nik's Silver Effex Pro .

The detail of the web and water is very well executed - I have trouble replicating as you will see below.
However, for a different image, I was drawn also to the house - perhaps webs and November go with a houses in the mist; yet the distance between them I think is a little empty - and so I cheated.

I like the birds - and yes they resonate with bats - but I think that works well for November. Similarly the trees in the middle for me add a spookiness in that they resonate as a pair of onlookers perhaps watching the bats approach. (I think the two pairs form a counter point).
My suggestion would be to eliminate the left third as I do not think it adds elements that are not already better represented elsewhere. For me, that removal affords greater contrast between the now fewer regions of light and darkness. In the image below I have dodged/burned the moon a little to add severity and I have tried to leave a little imbalance hoping to increase tension.

I also feel that you captured a "moment" of father and son: it does tug on the old heart strings. My impression was that you may have cropped too tightly. The people are the subject, but I think that the narrative would be enhanced if they were shown in the context of physical isolation (man and boy alone, together) by including more of the surroundings. Also I quite like to include the clutter in your original that adds a sense of motion for me by forming parallel diagonal lines in the direction the subjects are moving.

I have reworked a little and would appreciate your feedback as to whether it improves. I used the color to define different tones - and cropped (as per my wife) to reduce clutter.

99 Nov 22 Reply Thank you both for your appraisal - I think you are correct concerning the tonal invariance. I had wanted the focus to be the gates and the rest as background ... but it is not working as a whole.

My intent with the title - Peter - was a cross between those pearly-white gates leading to the afterlife and a nod to Waiting for Godot where the eponymous character is anticipated but strangely absent from every scene.
