Yes I like my Nik collection - it is an addon to photoshop (not a replacement). They have a 30 day free trial. I would not buy it after that however, I would probably wait until they send a "special offer" :-) |

Emily - if I am reading this correctly (and not just hopefully) I think you see the tracks as I did: as a fracturing of the verticals. I am please you like the image. |

So - the sky color is clearly a "feature" of this image - and I had not appreciated this problem; thank you all for raising it. I think I got lost in the contrasting while trying to bring out the sky. |

Robert, I cannot tell if your distress is a positive statement on a successful image or a cris de coeur that it should be banished from sight. I suspect the latter (thought tactfully stated) and will reserve this image for the next Mad Max exhibition. |

Out damned spots, out I say - must I another camera buy? And yes, my wife disliked the tracks as well. I call it life on the farm but it seems it distracts and that is never a good thing |

Cheryl - the subject and its time of day are so well selected resulting here I think in a lovely composition. Like you, I love the Nik color effects. For your consideration, here is your image with a further pass through the bleach bypass (saturation set back to unadjusted and higher local contrast). |

Dan - a stunning image. I am struck by the clarity and the color, and in particular the beauty of the trees. And I wish I had shot it.
To offer one suggest: I had a little trouble deciding what the subject was. Normally I laugh at statements like this since I have the attitude that "it is the landscape stupid" but with this image I felt unsure. For me, if it were my image, I would make the trees center stage, the main attraction. The water is interesting but the trees are superb. |

For me, the most striking aspect of this image is the color contrast between the foreground and the remainder: the blue dominates but it is so well offset by the grasses where the orange/brown is almost (?) the complementary color (as I read my color wheel). In the right two thirds I see verticals taking this contrast from the reeds, through the reflections and into the trees: a beautiful journey for the eye to follow. I am also struck by the crop which puts the strongest element off-center. Was it a deliberate use of thirds? I find it really effective. |

although I am late to the comments this month - I thought about your image before reading any of the other comments. And below is my version which seems close to some your your own developments. I think this photo screams B&W. We could talk about the subtle shades of blue - and its reflection in the snow - but I see wonderful textures and I worry that the color masks it.
FYI I used the Nik software with tonal contrast and bleach bypass with zero saturation - and cut off a sliver of tall trees on the left |

To my eyes - the negative space of the sky offers too much relief to the "tension" which I see in the assertive white ice that moves into the image, off-center, cutting the water. I would prefer to crop so that this will dominate, leaving the smaller details of the fowl and the buildings (with that so tranquil reflection) to offer balance and amelioration.
So yes to the lens - but few landscapes actually match the frame of a prime lens unless you can fly and cropping will often enhance. |
