Hi Robert
I had tried cropping in similar to what you have done but for me it seemed to lose something. Lately it seems I am drawn to a panoramic type of scene. Who knows it might just be a phase of my work and will change later. I tried softening the clouds and I think that makes it better by giving it a more natural look. What are your thoughts? |

No Problem Brian. I believe Robert does use film so if you are interested in that he is the expert. |

Thanks Robert
I have done one more edit which I will leave for a while and come back to it. Sometimes some distance and when you come back it just hits you what needs to be done. I have created more drama in the sky, darkened the shadows at the base of the trees but left the light on the tips so they don't look too dark as Haru has said. I used Dan's suggestion on the reflection but I darkened it and removed some of the clarity so it does not look too strong and distracting in the image. Then I put a radial circle around the left mountain and darkened the rest of the image to make that mountain the focal point. This is the best edit so far but I will come back later to see if I need to adjust somewhere. Many thanks to you and everyone else for helping me make something out of this image. |

Hi Brian
No I don't use film. I had thought of dabbling with film but I am now spoiled with the digital camera and the flexibility of editing in Lightroom and photoshop. Not to mention I don't have to worry about the cost of film and developing. |

Wow that does look cold. I just came back from Banff National park and it snowed every day. I will submit one of those images for next month.

Yes I agree, it is still too flat. I appreciate your edit. It showed me what you meant and I gave it a go on the original image. I posted a re-edit in my reply to Dan. Take a look and let me know if you think I went far enough or do I need to bump it up a bit more. |

Yes I think you are right that I need to define a focal point and this might be part of the problem of why it looks too busy. The eye just doesn't know where to go. Thank you for showing me with your edit. I like the idea and used it with an edit that I posted in my reply to Dan. Take a look. Do you think I need to go further by putting even more focus on the left mountain? |

This crop could be an option. It removes the "busyness" of the clouds. I am, however, still a bit attached to the clouds since that was what drew me to the scene in the first place. I will play around some more to see what I can do.

Thank you so much Dan. I have never used the selective color like that before. You have taught me something new and I think I will be using that a lot now. I have attached an edited version using the suggestions you and Robert have given me. Did I accomplish what you were describing? |

Hi Haru
I don't have too much to add. I think Robert covered it. To make this composition work you would have to darken around the main subject to take the focus off of all the competing, distracting elements and then enhance the icicles and the waterfall. The Original version has fewer shadows on the icicles and in my opinion better lighting. |

Hi Brian
Welcome, I am happy that you have joined us. I have never travelled to this area, so I am enjoying the image as a window to an area I have not travelled. I like the look of the old buildings on the left and wonder if another point of view would make them the focal point of the image. While the buildings on both sides and the road are leading the eye to the center of the image, I am left without a focal point to the image. Do you have any images from other points of view that show the unique windows and balconies from the front? I would love to see them. |

Oooohhhhh, I really like this one Robert. "Hidden Power" is exactly what I experience when looking at it. It has a mystery about it that causes me to explore what is hidden under the steam and in the nooks and crannies. I like Haru's idea of bringing out the detail in the waves and I would bring up the whites a bit to try and get the steam to look like the lava is glowing a bit more underneath. It is a great image. Yes you should do a series! |

Hi Dan
Another beautiful sky! At first I could not tell the lake was frozen and thought the bubbles were actually rocks under the water. For this reason I too thought it might be a composite and the branch was not sitting in the water. Once I realized the water was frozen it made much more sense. It is probably due to the low resolution of the image as well as my eyesight (I needed to get closer with my reading glasses LOL). I too really like the second image you posted. You could probably clone in a little on the bottom right if you thought it was necessary. |

Hi Gloria
We all try different things and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. In this case I don't experience what you are trying to portray. It is likely that you feel it because you experienced it when sitting there. I agree with most of the comments of the others on this one. Don't be discouraged though, keep experimenting.

Hi Bob
I like the layers in the composition and am longing to see more details in those layers. I wonder what it would look like with the shadows lifted a little? I agree that the color of the foreground is too red. I like the sky but its color doesn't seem to match the foreground. Kudos to you for finding a unique composition. I would have been drawn to the falls. I tend to go for the iconic image first and try to make it my own is some way although I am attempting to break out of that tendency now. |
