24 May 21 Reply Albert I have done this in a 16x20. In your comment re the crop did you mean to come in tighter to the second peak or to look for a frame that gives me more space at the top and thus a smaller crop? I may have that capture, I will have to look. May 30th
24 May 21 Reply I am standing on the crest of the terminal moraine. The big rocks in the foreground are part of that moraine. As one moves to the left the ridge drops down and one has a u-shaped ridge which rises back up to meet the left most mountain. May 30th
24 May 21 Reply Jim,

I provided Steve with some comments and an example on his gull image. See what you think. Did I go too far??

24 May 21 Comment Jim, This is a great capture!!! I like the colors in the bird in your second edit the best, but the water went too warm for my taste. If you select the bird, and mask you could take the water to the cool side or bring up the blue/gray part of the spectrum without changing the bird. I think the subtle warm/cool contrast would make the bird separate out better.

24 May 21 Comment Steve, I like this last one the best!! The interaction between the two makes it interesting, sort of like the one on the right thinking "what is this guy up to". The only way it gets better is if you got a shot where the two birds had a bit more separation. As for the initial edited shot I have two concerns. The biggest is the amputation of the right most bird's face, and to a lesser extent the amputation of the water drops coming from the beak of the one in the back. The other big problem is the out of focus of the two birds on the right. So my last suggestion is to use the patch tool to get rid of the two out of focus birds who are just taking up space and distracting us, and to crop to a pano. I would still like more space on the right to capture more of the dripping water. It would no longer be eligible in a nature competition, but the original would score very low. OTOH the edited image makes for a more pleasing image for display at home.

24 May 21 Comment Thorro, Interesting subject and good colors. I agree with Steve re striving for set ratios, but that is mostly driven by trying to size my prints to pleasing ratios. In that vein I often try to capture my images with extra area around the subject. As I look at your original I would have wanted more space in front of the boat so when it came to a final crop I could place the boat more to the left leaving more distance to the RH edge, yet have options for a choice of aspect ratios. 24 May 21 Comment Hi Sam, Really nice piece of work here. I think the composition is good and the background complements the subject well. The contrast in wood grains between the broad even strokes of the cutting board against the fine irregular, curved strokes of the table add a great deal to this image. The top/back light on the flowers gives them some nice texture, but I think some adjustment brush treatment to the front of the white and pink rose to give some highlight and contrast to that region would help bring that area to life. 24 May 21 Reply Hi Steve, Thanks for the input. WRT the tree on the right..... I felt I needed a RH frame for this image, as the lake bends out of view to the right and there are 5 more peaks not visible from this vantage point. In my mind I needed a closure on that side. I also have images where I have included more of the forest to the RH side but I liked the thinner edging here. I may try a version where I put more of the tree into the frame to see how that feels. I have ventured further to the left and have some images that peek around the corner and perhaps I will someday process one or two for commentary. Tab May 12th
24 May 21 Reply I like it. It gives an extra pop to the blossoms and helps bring the viewer back into the center as their eye roams through the image.
