Thorro, I like where you are going with this. However, I think it needs more space on left to move image edge away from boat bow, on the bottom to include the cluster of beach paraphernalia just below the boat, on the right to include the full party that have been amputated in mid group. No amputations for this image. I like the color scheme, especially lightening the sand and putting gold/orange into the waves. To me the major theme of the image is the boats, the beach folk are a supporting cast. I think I would play with the sail color on the left boat. Maybe the two dark blue patches in the sail should be white to give it some contrast/life. Can't tell until you try. This is an image that fits nicely into the PSA "creative" genre. In that division of PSA realism is to be shunned.

Sam,
You did everything just right in the way you post processed this image. I would do only one thing more if it were mine. I would crop it as a vertical. Put the stalk off center, with more space on the big butterfly side (left).

My first impression on viewing the image is that this is a "slice of life" (in my terms) not a portrait. Others may term it photojournalistic. In the image as you initially present it there are three major compositional elements, an in focus hand, a HOT not focussed outside the car scene, and a region somewhat hot containing sharp hair and perhaps a very hot sunlit car seat. The HOT is extremely attracting/distracting, the hand is the subject (I cannot tell if the individual under the hand is male, female, young or old so cannot be the subject this image (therefore not a portrait). Sam's thoughts resonate some with my thinking. We are seeing either sadness, worry, or "it is so damn bright in this place my eyes hurt." All the other comments in this thread are technical in nature and do address image problems, and so I do not disagree with them. However, the story here (and that is the FIRST thing of importance to the "slice of life", or PJ genre) is unclear to me and so I lose interest. At the first level I think we need to bring the face into the image to make it as important as the hand. Jim made a valiant effort, but it seems there is not enough info in the pixels to make it happen. If one could have used some kind of reflector during capture that night have given enough light to preserve detail to the face. If we could bring the face alive then the big Q is the outside crowd, are they important in any way. If not, the tone/heat has to be diminished so as to not distract from the person. Sam is right about the hot spot above the hair line, total distraction zero contribution. |

Here is a better version with the bird back to the original. One would need to refine the edges on the selection to make this first class. Then the water needs to be played with toget it to a more natural tone. |

Jim, Good capture!!! I messed with it a bit to give you a flavor of what you could do with the color change question. First watch this video
<<< https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/change-color-object.html >>
I messed with a raw developer first but that did not go where I wanted so the bird lost some quality. However, you can do anything you want with the color of the water. You can see my feeble attempt in the attached. Watch the video and then play with it. I think your bird is Good w/o the further adjustment I added on my part.
