24 Aug 20 Comment Jim, Good image! I think you need that foreground element to put things into perspective. My grandson and I went to look for it a few days prior to your post and found it with binoculars, but I never thought about taking a photo at the time. However, you got me thinking, and so we went and did some photography on the Perseid's meteor shower. I am playing with the results in photoshop in preparation for doing a teaching session for our camera club. Perhaps sometime in the coming months I can put it in for discussion. I am using the compositing technique that was discussed in a PhotoPills zoominar held early this month. Unfortunately, the airplanes and satellite captures are more interesting than the few meteors I did get, but then again I was not going to sit for two hours to catch the peak at midnight. 24 Aug 20 Reply I think the green darken is a good idea. However, compositionally, I was not shooting for the 1/3 power points. In my comp the bees lie on corner angle bisector lines from the various corners. To me it is a stronger layout. If you check it out with LR tools, both bees are in line with the upper LH bisector, The upper be also lies on the lower LH bisector, and the lower bee is also on the upper RH bisector. Aug 5th
24 Aug 20 Comment I played a little with the image. Used a curves adj w a luminosity mask for the whites and I think I put some life into the snow. I also did a little with curves and a dark luminosity mask, not sure if it helped the beast. I also notice you have some heavy red-green fringing in the snow bank above the river. That is easily cleaned up with defringe during the raw develop stage. Aug 5th
24 Aug 20 Comment Hi Thorro, Welcome to our group!! I agree with all the comments that have been sent your way in the above discussion. There is, however, one additional thought I would like offer for consideration. It is particularly important in these dark on light situations. Much of the commentary has focussed on bringing out detail/texture in the animal, and that is clearly first priority. It is also important to try and capture texture in the snow (and for landscapes >> in the clouds). It seems that the image shows some weak shading in the snow, and you might be able to tease out some detail there by revisiting the RAW development phase.

24 Aug 20 Comment Here is a close to sqaure crop from a different part of the image. I think each one has merit. Tab Aug 4th
24 Aug 20 Comment Here is a vertical crop no other edits. Tab Aug 4th
24 Aug 20 Comment Laura, The tulips and water drops are wonderful. The lighting in this case results in a tough exposure on the subject making PostProc essential and you have accomplished a great deal in that area. My approach to flowers is "go close". I see at least 3 separate compositions in your image. As it stands there is too much going on for me. By getting in tighter you can also get more pixels, sharpness and detail on the droplets and main flowers in the comp. I also think the background can be darkened and the tulips brightened more. To do this I would use masks to control the adjustments. I am appending 3 edits to illustrate my thoughts. 1 & 2 are just crops of your original that I think can make striking images on their own. The third is a crop along with some sloppy masking to give you an idea of how one might darken the background and enhance the main subject. However, before spending much time playing w PS I would go back to Descanso and "get close". It is a lovely place. My wife and I lived in Montrose in 66-67 when I was at JPL, and we visited the gardens a number of times. Tab Aug 4th
24 Aug 20 Comment Sam, You have made an excellent composite here. I had not been exposed to the Displacement Map technique before, and I thank you for that. I checked out the UTube reference you gave and then found a few more that went into greater depth. I liked this link { https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DErqXzQ3Qkw } in particular. What blending mode did you use to prevent the zebra legs from being affected by the crosswalk, or was that done by masking?? I like the result, the curve of the road really frames everything well. The rider's shirt is perfect, it's almost like you bought it for her. Great image. Tab Aug 3rd
