62 Sep 21 Reply Emil,
I checked out the photographer you mentioned, Angie McMonigal, and Wow, what great stuff. As you might imagine, I am a fan! Thank you for that tip!
I think your idea for the crop - which Oliver put into practice - is a good one. Thanks for that.
And for your other comments as well.

62 Sep 21 Comment LuAnn,
thank you so much for your response. I have to confess, my initial reaction upon reading about your research was, I'm nonplussed- then I had to look up "nonplussed" to make sure I was using the word correctly. I was as one of its meaning is
"unsure how to respond or act."
I appreciate the information on abstract B& W photography - and I think I can understand the motivation - but the info helped me as well to better understand the subtleties of the genre.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in your summary of your research, but which seems to apply, and that is that it made you think. I think that is not such a bad outcome for an abstract photo, to make the viewer stop and think.
As far as my specific photo goes, I haven't had time / opportunity to play around with the Emil suggested/Oliver executed edit, but I can see its vitues. As to vertically straightening the lines in the wall, not sure that can be accomplished with this image. And, sometimes, you know, trying again, it is never the same, but I might get to the venue to reshoot and see how things come out this time around. Will keep you posted!
Thanks again for the thoughtful comments.

62 Sep 21 Comment Thanks, Oliver,
I appreciate the feedback. This was totally an experimental image, but I find I'm liking it very well.
I do also appreciate the edits - if I'm not mistaken, you've tried the crop that someone suggested - lower on the top, wider on the side - and I do like what you did with the light. It's a completely different look, I'll study on it.
Thank you.

62 Sep 21 Reply Radial filter, makes perfect sense.

I couldn't stop thinking about your image, and wondered what it might look like in a present in ON1Raw I stumbled across, calotype. I ended up not liking that - way too grainy - but the albumen effect seems to give it that nineteenth-century look.

62 Sep 21 Comment Bob, great image, agreed (and kudos) on the overall sharpness. I think EMil's version with the dodging and burning helps reduce the background, and thus provide more contrast between the background and the riders. It helps to increase the drama of the image.

I am not sure what makes a fine art photograph, either, but think it must be (like so many things) in the eye of the beholder. I say go for it.

62 Sep 21 Comment Bunny, my first thought when seeing the smaller clip on the group page was, that looks like Halloween - so mission accomplished there. Fascinating tidbit about the owner of the house and her fascination with spider webs. One comment on the background, I find the dark diagonal line in the background at the center of the web to be distracting, and wonder if there is a way to eliminate or reduce that. A small point, fun image! (I do wonder what it would look like in color.) Sep 3rd
62 Sep 21 Comment Emil, wow, I would not have guessed this engine was from the 1940s, I was expecting to read that it was from the nineteenth century. The black and white especially makes it completely timeless. I love the train and the smoke and the sky, but find the foreground (gravel railbed and late summer foliage) to be a bit too textury and therefore distracting. I am not sure what to recommend to "tone" that area down, and, in truth, it is a minor quibble. Great image! Sep 3rd
62 Sep 21 Comment Pete,
I'm a sucker for barns and photos of barns (they are very much disappearing from the landscape). I like what you've done with this image, and especially the way you brought the texture out in the siding of the barn.

62 Sep 21 Comment Thanks, Bunny,
appreciate the feedback. I will be the first to admit, post is not my forte. You'd think with all the downtime we've all had this past year, I'd have been able to put it to good use but it didn't work out that way.

I will play with the suggestion of revising the color rather than eliminating the bumper.
