OK, a delayed reply to everybody (the delay was inconsiderate, sorry):
I can't post any of my pictures from that day because they're too fat - too many pixels. I agree with Sophie that you want space in front of a bird for the bird to move into.
A closer look (in response to Larry) about the shingle look is that looking at all the originals from that day there was a deep shadow under all the feathers in all the pictures. So if I would have raised the exposure in the capture, or pulled pixels from the shadows in LR (I don't know why they call it "Classic" when Steve's LR 4 is the true classic) that would have made the feathers seem more feathery. |

Steve, clearly the name of the bird suggests an expression in B&W. And its beauty suggests a minimalist approach, especially standing in the water with no distractions. My only concern is that the black seems quite flat. I tried to play with it in LR, but given the limitations of size for posting here and my limited skills I couldn't find any way to bring out "unflatten" the black of the chest, stomach, head and back. |

Thorro, I like your edit and the limited tonal range, as well as the shallow depth of field directing our attention to the squirrel and the contrast of textures. But the squirrel seems somewhat lost. Another point of focus for me is what appears to be a midden behind the squirrel of discarded food. A suggested crop brings the squirrel and its midden more into prominence. |

Hi Sophia, wonderful capture! It's almost like you staged it to get the heron's eye and the frog's eyes in the same shot. I agree with Steve's edit because the heron's plumage color and the green of the background are so close. Steve's toning down the background clearly helps for me. But I'd go a bit further. There's quite a large number of pixels on the left of the image that distract me from the drama. I cropped out a large space on the left. BUT, I don't like having pushed the frog all the way to the border of the picture. So... |
