I agree with Thorro about the lack of focus. I wish I were back in Belize to get the pic again! I have 2 more issues with the image, and I'm curious if they could be addressed in the Nature+ category. The less serious issue is that the melon skin between the head of the lower bird and the abdomen of the upper bird is the same color as the leaves in the background. Is there some ethical way to distinguish the hues, or saturation? A more serious problem for me is that the black feathers of the two birds merge (they are the same species after all!). Is there some way to process the picture to "distinguish" their feathers?
One other point to consider with the above issues is that the "hand of man" is clearly present in the fruits in the trough. So this picture would never qualify in a pure Nature category. |

Hi Thorro,
I really like the depth of field which shows all the mountains so well, and the haze which accentuates the distance to the farther mountains. I also like the processing in which you brought out the mountain faces, and increased the tonal range. I agree with Matt that the real estate in the frame occupied by the near trees could be trimmed, yielding a more panoramic feeling.
My other wish is that nature had cooperated and the ring of clouds had not followed the mountain tops so closely. But that's mostly inevitable since the mountains make the clouds, at least later in the day. |

Steve, having spent many more hours than I care to admit trying to get a flying dragonfly (I have managed to get a couple of slow flying damselflies), I'm impressed. I'm also jealous because here on Cape Cod our dragon season is drawing to a close. In the future I'll post some of my efforts.
I agree on the crop, and with you on the purity of the final picture. |

Sophia, I know that an ideal shot shows an animal's eyes, if possible looking at the camera. I don't see how you could do that for elk head butting each other. But you did it! I'm impressed.
I also like the way you unsaturated the grass and brought out their eyes. If this weren't a nature group I might suggest removing the blades of grass around their heads, but that edit might not respect the integrity of the shot. |
