Thanks for the tip Andrew. I agree and I did try to get the skull a bit more defined, but to get the smoke to work I needed it in front of the skull and I just needed a bit more DOF. Also, it is a bit tricky to get the smoke sharp since it is always moving. I did want the skull to be red and I think that contributes to the softness too--perhaps more bright light in the red would work next time. |

Thanks Mark. I was experimenting a bit with other items, but didn't have anything at hand that looked good. I really started with small carved faces that I thought would look good, but they were a bit too small. I had the skull from a still life project in the past and it proved to a good subject. I will give it a go in the future with a different set up sometime. |

Thanks Bunny. I had to take a lot of shots to "learn" how do do this. Smoke has a mind of its own! |

Your choice of infrared works well here Mark. I like the contrast of the three progressively larger cacti in the back against the large one in the front whose time has passed. The circle of life perhaps? The IR gives us that stark, no nonsense look which is perfect here. I also like the treatment of the darker sky vs. the lighter ground. My only suggestion would be to clone out the fence and pole if possible.
Nice image. |

Well you got a great in flight shot of this Canada Goose. Nice sharpness in the feathers and good lighting on the wings. You even caught him calling! You really made the background and water into a nice soft contrasting color and the bit of weeds in the top of the frame gives a sense of place. Well done Harley, 15 fps gives a few choices when processing doesn't it? |

I like the mill house, but love the trees. That is where the story it at. They look larger than life and your treatment of them makes me afraid to go into the forest. I would think Katniss would be close by with her bow and arrow. I think the green of the grass goes against the overall mood of your shot though. You might want to desaturate a bit to give it a more somber look just to see what it looks like. Nice work. |

Very nice composition Bunny, I like how the golden glow of the water leads us through the ice in the water on to your subject the berg. The reflections in the water are wonderful with the golden glow of late day Golden Hour--it almost looks like molten gold. The colors are mirrored, of course, with the sky and more gold there. I would suggest to push up the whites in Lightroom as they seem a bit grey even though it is late afternoon. If that doesn't work perhaps a bit of plus exposure with the brush tool just to brighten up the darker areas (not the far background though). Beautiful shot. |

Very interesting bug Andrew. You are showing us some nice detail and sharpness on this little guy and I like the fact that you are showing its underside with the hairs there. A uncommon pose indeed, but works very well here. You have one arcing stem going from top left to bottom right which is framing the subject nicely at the top. I am a bit bothered by the stem that juts up to the right top and while it and the subject form parallel lines I would suggest a crop (about 1/4 in from the right at the intersection and clone out the bit that is left). This would bring more attention to the subject and eliminate a bright distraction. You might want to try to brighten up the bug just a bit too, that way you may get more detail in the darker areas. Your patience paid off here. Flying insects seem to never stop long enough to get a shot. |
