43 Apr 20 Comment Thanks for your comments Mike. You are correct regarding white matting and frame for display. Apr 22nd
43 Apr 20 Reply Thanks for your comment Lane. I did try a different background, but the few colors I looked at did not work very well. I think I need to invest in a color wheel! I hear what you are saying about the stark black though. I use it for a lot of flowers to create sort of specimen look. Certainly not a picture for most living room walls. Apr 21st
43 Apr 20 Reply Thanks for your comment Linda. Your suggested crop certainly captures the most interesting half of the flower. I agree about the white, it could be toned down a bit as well as the green stem as others have mentioned. Apr 20th
43 Apr 20 Reply I like this very much, you have make a good photo a great photo. Good work. Apr 19th
43 Apr 20 Reply Thanks Harley. Helicon Focus is supposed to be one of the best programs for focus stacking. It is something I would like to try in the future if I keep using this technique. Apr 8th
43 Apr 20 Reply Thanks for your comments Larry. I kept the green stem so the flower wasn't just floating in air. I'll try to tone it down and see how it looks.
As for focus stacking, it's challenging! I have only tried it a few times and it is super time consuming and almost impossible to keep everything rock solid. I am using a focusing rail. I determine the front and rear focus points I want, then start with the front focus point and keep moving the rail 1mm or less for each shot toward the final focus point. No changes to the camera in terms of lens adjustment, just use the rail. I combine everything in Photoshop CC. There are better programs out there, but I thought I would start with something I already had.

43 Apr 20 Comment Reflection shots are always so nice, it's like getting 2 for 1. I see some interesting color in the sky and nice shades of blue. The colors seem a little faint though. Maybe a bit more saturation would make those colors pop a bit more. You have found an interesting tree line with the center clump of trees standing out and letting us see light through their branches which adds interest. I find that the center line of the reflection is quite dark though and I can not make out any detail. Perhaps lightening that up a bit would help.
I like the splash rings in the water in the center, they add interest and make me wonder what caused them.

43 Apr 20 Comment Very nice street shot. Love the interaction between the magician and the girl, you can tell he is instructing her on what to do. The box that says "Magic Show" is perfect for this shot--glad you captured it. You have peak action with the girl cutting the cards, I only wish I could see more of the expression on her face. But street photography is a lot of grab and go and you grabbed a good one. As for the background I feel it is integral to the story and doesn't seem to distract for me, but tells its own story. 43 Apr 20 Comment I like how the leafy growth is spotlighted popping out of the darkness and then how my eye moves to the interesting moss or lichen on the dead log and the surrounding area with all of its rich color and texture. This shot certainly keeps your attention and it is very well done. Lots to see, I can almost smell the forest. The light grey twig isn't a deal breaker, but might benefit from some darkening if you choose. Apr 7th
43 Apr 20 Comment I like how you have captured this pelican and how you can see all of the feathers on its wings. Gives nice texture to your shot. Very nice to see the water droplets coming off of his body, makes me think he has just taken off from the bayou.
I notice that your shot was at 1250 ISO which may account for the background noise (or was that placed there purposely) which actually helps to focus on the bird and give a nice soft canvas for the subject.
This is presented dead center and I wonder how it would look if there more room at the right for him to fly into the shot keeping him in the left third of the shot. None the less this is a nice nature photo.

43 Apr 20 Comment This guy posed nicely for its portrait. Very sharp and lots of detail where it counts and the eyes have nice little catch lights. I think the monochrome treatment works well for the leopard. As a suggestion I might want to see the left side around the ears and face just a bit brighter so I could see a bit more of his spots. Nice shot. Apr 4th
43 Apr 20 Comment Good choice converting to monochrome. I really like the repeating pattern of the bulk loaders, their large size makes a statement. The monochrome treatment coupled with the ripples on the water give this a strong industrial gritty look that is very appealing. Would you consider cropping the buildings out to the tops of the trees? I feel that this might give the loaders even more impact. Apr 4th
