Hello Stuart
Thank you. Yes it is still unclear to me. If you could email me rbasacker@comcast.net I would appreciate your help. One question: I manually focus. I set my aperture to f/22, then I turn focus ring to 1:1 magnification, if it's blurry I turn the focus ring until it is focused. At that point I would be focusing at less than 1:1. Am I correct? When I move back and forth to focus without turning the focus ring it is difficult to achieve sharp focus which I cannot do when using a tripod.

Hi Stuart
Thank you for your explanation. I have so much to learn. I have a question about my macro lens. After reading the posts from you and Tom I checked the apertures available on the lens so I could practice with different apertures. I see that as I focus the lens: 1:1 focus I can go up to f/64; then at 1:2 the highest is f/51; 1:5 highest is f/45; and at infinity the highest is f/32. At these apertures the shutter speed is at least 30 seconds. I never shot at these f stops but I wonder when would one use these high number f stops. Macro photography is challenging.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Stuart,
Thank you.
You explained everything very well. I have a question about my macro lens. When I focus the lens 1:1 I can set the aperture to f/64. As I focus the lens 1:2 the highest aperture is f/51; 1:5 is f/45. Focused to infinity is f/32. At these settings the shutter speed is 30". I have never used these apertures. What am I missing? So much to learn.

Hi Stuart,
Thank you for that information. If I understand you to get maximum sharp detail I should set the aperture 1 or 2 stops down from my smallest F stop. I am trying to achieve sharp details front to back of image. The smallest setting on my macro lens is f/64. Should I set the f stop 2 stops down from f/64? Would I need a flash to compensate?

Hi Tom,
Thank you for your comments. I shot this flower with a D500; 90mmm macro lens; tripod; F8; 1/25 second; ISO 5000; overhead room lights. I shot this with Auto ISO, but since switched to setting ISO manually to avoid high noise. Is that a good thing? Basic post processing in Adobe Camera Raw. Can I achieve a tack sharp image like your images without focus stacking? It seems when I focus 1:1 magnification little of image is sharp, so I manually focus until the image is sharp.
However, it's not as close as I want. Any suggestions are appreciated. I want my images to be like yours. Be well.

It's perfectly exposed and very sharp. The little dandelion is so powerful. No need to improve this image. |
