Hi Ed, thank you for sharing.
I like color version better. For me, the highlight of the image is the colored eye and the sensitive pattern of colors. The ear is not sharp, maybe it is motion blur. That's helps my eye focusing on the eye. I might try to crop the top a bit, maybe 3x2 format. It might help to make it dramatic. |

Hi Robert,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I encounter a lot of cases like this.
In the case like yours, where you do not have any clouds, then I might not shoot entire fall. I would take long lens and focus on the interesting texture of the fall. Or I would try different format, i.e. 16x9 or 1x1.
Looking at the original, it has a good space above the fall(color version with sky).
And it reveals a heart shaped in the valley. Can you see that?
The mountain at the back adds depth.
So in this case, I would not necessary to crop out the sky. I would edit to emphasize the heart shape valley, cut the left side, and highlight the fall a bit.
I am on the road now and back on Fri. I will try myself. Please bear with me for a while.

Thank you, Robert, for your comments and your attempt.
My dilemma is that if I crop out the yellow tree, it lose the depth., I thought. It would become just a flat image. That's what I was afraid of.
I did not notice the color will become weird, thank you for mentioning.
And I would cleanup the bits and pieces as you pointed out. |

Hi Robert,
Thank you for sharing.
Nice try for BW, which you do not normally do. I guess your attempt to make it mysterious is somewhat achieved, especailly around the fall. But the foreground is so bright that it reduce the effect of "mistery".
Before talking about tonarity in depth, I need to mention a couple of things.
1. For me, the top is too tightly cut and it looks unbalanced. I assume that you have some reason to cut.
2. I understand your attempt of framing V shape valley. However, lower left looks empty for me. It is processed dark, so there is a big space almost nothing to see, which caused the unblance.
3. The space below the V shape vs. The space above the fall - It is not equal which looks very unbalanced in entire composition.
I am for the direction you are heading in post-processing.
Do you have any other shot with a different composition?

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for sharing.
In my understanding, sun flare become now well accepted these days in the landscape photography world, especially if it is intended and add value to the image. So I do not mind that so much.
But I am with Robert to crop left. It is because lower left does not look add value to the image for me. The highlight is heavy weighted in right side.
Your edit looks better than the original.
2 inputs.
1. I feel the sky is too wide without any cloud action.
2. I am not sure that BW conversion is the right solution in this image. I like the color palette, the color of the boats, the blue of the lake, and the blue of the sky, all different colors. That's what I like about this image. |

Hi Rick,
Thank you for sharing.
Interesting theme - "relationship between humans and nature"
I think the volume of greens at top is good enough. I do not feel to crop down.
It shows the vitality of the plants. It looks powerful for me compared with the man made object.
And 1x1 format fits well in this scene for my eye. Good try! |

Hi Kenneth,
Thank you for sharing.
I am attracted by the motion blur. The colors are one of good feature of this image, but what makes this image unique is the motion blur.
I prefer to see the back ground more. It is not blurred, and the contrast of motion vs sitting still looks interesting to me. |
