74 Feb 24 Reply Thank you, Stacey.
I really like this image. I was trying to create like this.
Well, actually I used to live in Utah and Deer Creak is one of my favorite spot to visit. What a coincidence!

If you really feel that this is really a "magic tree" in a "ghost forest", then you saved my day. I am glad to hear that. Let me look back your suggestion - you might be right.

Your crop might work but it lost white forest for me. I need to present white forest holizontally. I feel even now that I needed to expand the holizen in the original.
But thank you for your suggestion.

74 Feb 24 Reply Hi Stacy,
Thank you for your comments. Appreciate it.
I convered the image to BW globally but at the same time, I changed the tone by 7 or 8 key colors (Photoshop).
What I aimed at was;
1. white birch tree birightest
2. green forest second brightest
3. dark tree at the back need to be dark
You are right. the green in the foreground should a bit more dark compared with the green in the forest.
It was my oversight. I should have paid more careful attention. Thank you for mentioning!

74 Feb 24 Comment Hi Melissa,
Thank you for sharing your attempt. I understand what you are trying to achieve.
By including tall and big wall, your story became stronger in my view. And in this case, I feel the colors distract the story-telling. So I think this is on the track to tell your story in my opinion.
I might ask myself a couple of questions when I shoot on the spot to strengthen the story;
1. Can I shoot from the ground? (how low was your camera when shot?)
2. Do I need a right side of depth? Or could I take it out or include much portion in the frame?
3. Is shooting from this angle right? What would happen if shoot from far left?
I am saying these without knowing the surroundings. So please excuse me in that sense.
But overall nice try and attempt.

74 Feb 24 Comment Hi Stacey,
Thank you for sharing. A interesting story of "moody" and "Moody".
I personally like the foggy image. But when it comes to shoot, the weather does not coporate to me always.
I cannot tell which comes first for me. Both have a different charactor. BW reminds me an scene of an old movie, feeling of good memeories, but some worries/fear involved. This is an personaly opinion but the letters in BW distract my eyes a bit, which does not happen in color version.
I like the color version as well - I expecially like the subtle colors. It gives me warm feeling. Maybe because of pink color in the image.

74 Feb 24 Comment Hi Ed,
Thank you for sharing.
It is well throught through in framing.
In this case, I perfer BW. It deliver the story better than colors for me.
I like the presentation of mood and texture of the rusty rooms and the building.

74 Feb 24 Comment Wow! Beautiful...
It looks really "happy couple".
By taking out the colors, my eyes go straight to the faces of the couple. Definately I prefer BW version.
Post processing is also done well. It maintain the texture of clothes and skin.
Fantastic!
Well done.

96 Feb 24 Comment Hi Gloria,
Thank you for sharing.
It is beautiful!
The shape of clouds, the tone and colors in the sky, and the shadows of clouds in the sea - very nice!
I like the allocation of space; sky 8 vs. 2 in the sea. It make the image look dynamic. Let's keep breaking the old rules!
Emotional aspect, "a sense of mystery, of foreboding" - maybe partially yes from upper sky with dark clouds. But center of attention is middle part of nice layers of clouds and warm colors. So my impression is driven by that part which is a bit different from "mistery".
Finally, I need some anchors in the frame. It could be a ship/boat, or an island(s), which makes the image more stable in my opinion.
But I really love those clouds and subtle colors.

96 Feb 24 Comment Hi Robert,
Thank you for sharing another beautiful secene image. I enjoyed a lot.
When I looked at this, I looks unnatural to my eye. The main reason is that the color (white balance/tempreture) looks completely different in upper half and lower half and nothing bridges the two. Lower half is in shadows so it might have blue tint but is it so? even in the sunset? And the interesting shape rock on upper left looks too yellowish. And even entire upper half is yellow casted. When I looked at the original, it is all bule casted. So I was puzzuled what did you do in the post processing.
My suspicion is that you warmed up just upper half too much (which makes it yellow casted) but kept the white balance in the lower half.
My attempt;
I started with the original. First, I warmed up entire frame. And added blue tint back in linear gradient filter in lower half. Opened up the shadows of the trees. Then, with luminosity mask, I added evening yellow glow in the paint blush.
And lastly the upper right corner is still too bright for me. yes, it distracts my eye.

96 Feb 24 Comment Hi Howard,
Thank you for sharing.
The strong presence of the hotel in the frame. It is powerful. If you increase more space in the frame, maybe it would become a snapshot, and I would not feel good about this image.
I am not sure how much you edited in the post processing, but it looks great.
I like the texture of the clouds, colors are not too saturated and it looks very natural.
Well done in that sense.
I do not shoot buildings since I do not like to see the line are distorted here and there and I can never fix right.
In the case here, I looked again and again but it does not look straight in my eye. Maybe my eyes are wrong…
