11 Mar 21 Reply 2003 vintage digital cameras produced lots of noise in the dark areas. Global sharpening and positive "clarity" or "structure" adjustments accentuate this. Not having seen the actual rock formation, I wasn't bothered by the grainy texture. In film days grain was considered artistic in BW photos.

If you want to fight another round, working on a copy of the original jpeg, see if negative "clarity" and/or negative "texture" adjustments smooth out the rock surfaces before you apply any other enhancements.		 Mar 11th
