Your shading adjustments all work, the last image is an improvement. I like the bright wide eyes - before birth he would have had some sensations of sound and touch, but visual signals would be completely new to his brain. |

Contrast, texture, and shading make aspen trunks intriguing subjects for BW treatment, finding a successful composition is the challenge. I like the tighter crop better, in Original 2 the vertical lines wander apart at the top. Also consider not darkening the leaves as much to separate the foliage from the scars in the bark. |

I think the patch of open water detracts from the frozen, depth-of-winter mood in this photo. Cropping it out creates a more panoramic aspect ratio, and makes me feel more surrounded by the cold. |
