2 Jul 21 Reply Thanks so much, Jim! You're right, it's not fine art, I just found it comical to see the birds looking back at those looking at them. This was actually taken at the Jacksonville Zoo. I'm not a big fan of the Alligator Farm, although I did have the photographers' pass for 2 years. This pass allows us photographers access an hour earlier in the morning before the general public and later in the afternoon after it closes. I just find it difficult to get a decent background since the birds are generally in their nests in the trees. It is interesting, however, to watch all the different birds and their courting and nesting behavior. If you come to this part of FL each year, St Augustine has a BirdingFest each April. Some of their workshops take place at the Alligator Farm. Just an FYI. You can Google it for more info. Jul 27th
2 Jul 21 Reply Thanks, Piers for your observation of the shadows on the right side. I guess my thoughts on that were that there was nothing there of interest or to actually add to the story, therefore could remain in the shadows. I will play around with it and see what I think. Thanks again. Jul 27th
2 Jul 21 Reply Thank you so much, Bev. I tried the camera idea but couldn't figure out how or where to put the strap. Jul 27th
2 Jul 21 Comment Thank you, Shirley! I like the idea of cameras around the birds neck. Lol! Yes, when I turned around and saw them all lined up, I just knew I had to capture it. I'm glad you like it as well. I'll have to think about how to make it more cartoonish! Jul 2nd
2 Jul 21 Comment Sometimes, Jim, we just can't seem to capture with our cameras what it is our eyes are actually seeing. I'll bet this was beautiful looking at it standing there. The colors are captivating, I'm a sucker for wrought iron so I love the railings, and the flower boxes provide just the right amount of color leading up to that perfect sky. Personally, I made a shot similar to this in a building in the Netherlands. Like you, I tried to do something with it so others could share in its beauty. I just could never get the image that I captured to look like what my eyes actually saw. Nice image all the same! Jul 2nd
2 Jul 21 Comment Piers, as much as I love the colors in your edited image, I think I like the original better with the trees. Perhaps because I'm not sure what your intended subject is, the original keeps me in the veranda wondering what it would be like to sit at those tables having a picnic and looking out over the pond. In the edited version, I'm feeling lost with the tables and just want to focus on the sky. The edited version makes me feel as though I'm looking up almost like I'm in a boat trying to look over the front. Although I don't think you changed the perspective from one image to the second, to me, the sky change provides a more dramatic expression from someone taking the shot from a lower angle. Jul 2nd
2 Jul 21 Comment It was very nice that this young man agreed to pose for your portrait, Jaqueline, but I have to agree with Martin's comments. I don't do portraits much at all but I recently took a workshop from a gentleman, Rick Ferro, that shoots for Disney World. His instruction is to first determine which eye is the bigger (everyone has one eye that's bigger than the other) then have the model posed so that the bigger eye is closest. You should also be aware of how much white of the eye is showing and keep that to a minimum when you set the model's gaze. Check out his website at RickFerro.com He has a Rick's Tips tab there you might find helpful. I envy you in that you were able to ask this young man to pose. I have trouble doing that so I just take candid shots on the street. Jul 2nd
2 Jul 21 Reply Thanks so much for your comments, Jaqueline! I will play around with the crop. I don't want to come up from the bottom too much, because I do like the feel of an onlooker (me) capturing the folks looking up while the birds are looking down. I'm afraid another trip to the zoo will have to wait a few months. The heat & humidity is dreadful here and probably will be into Sept. Jul 2nd
2 Jul 21 Comment Beautiful shot, Shirley! I love the rich colors you were able to bring out in post. The sunburst really finishes the image nicely. I have never been to this location and maybe it's just me, but I do feel as though the rock is a bit tilted back. I wonder if that could me adjusted under Effects in LR? Jul 2nd
