5 May 20 Reply Barbara, I have too much on my plate right now. I am taking the PSA Course "Creating Competitive Images" and with Covid 19 it's tough to get out and take people images. I've been stuck on that lesson since March. Jon recently gave me some other lessons and I'm working hard trying to get back on schedule of completing one Lesson per month. Also without travel to different locations around the globe it's harder to get that special and unusual image. Maybe in the future.

5 May 20 Reply Mark, I just returned from over two weeks of Nature photography. Since you are on the eastern side of the Texas Hill Country you know that area was very dry before the rains started in early May. The temperatures had risen to the point that most birds were regularly visiting the water holes for a drink and a bath. Before the rains started I could take over a thousand images a day. After the rains less than a hundred. I did get a good image of a Black-capped Vireo which just came off the endangered species list two or three years ago. The male visited the water 4 or 5 times while I was there. Thanks for the comments. May 17th
5 May 20 Reply Larry, Thanks for your comments and blue ribbon. I agree with more space at the top but I have entered both Original 1 and Original 2 in Photo contests for Nature. I did not have more room at the top and cropped the image to give the bird as much room around it without creating too much negative space. I have used the method you talked about in non-Nature competitions to expand the canvas when needed.

Thanks again for taking the time and commenting on an image outside of your normal two Groups 36 & 67.

5 May 20 Reply Richard, Thanks for your perspective on the three images. I am very lucky to have access to 320 acres full of Painted Buntings, Scott's Orioles, Summer Tanagers, Ash-throated Flycatchers, Orange-crowned Warblers, Blue Grosbeaks, Eastern Bluebirds, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and many other Texas Hill Country birds. Original 1 and Original 2 have been entered in Photo Club competitions and Original 1 scored higher. The problem is you never get feed back on your submitted image other than a score. I am thankful Barbara allowed me to get feed back on all three images. It gives me a different perspective from other like-minded photographers in words and not a score. May 17th
5 May 20 Reply Oliver, I struggled with Original 1 because it had some harsh light which caused the colors to shine. The other two images had softer light which made them easy to Post Process for Nature. I thought the spread wings with all the color was a capture very rarely seen from a Painted Bunting. I've taken thousands of images of Painted Buntings and I never had one with the wings totally spread. I'm not sure how it happened whether he was landing or taking off but it was afternoon light an hour or two before dark. My goal was to minimize the shine and make the colors as realistic as possible. Thanks for your comments and discussion. May 17th
5 May 20 Reply Barbara, Sorry for the late response. I've been out of town for more than 2 weeks.

Thanks for allowing all three images for discussion. I also like the Original 2

He has more character than the other two. The image name is "Look at Me". I've never submitted the main image to my Photo Club's monthly competition because I thought the other two were stronger images. Actually Original 1 did better in multiple competitions than Original 2. Thanks for all the input.

5 May 20 Comment Richard, A beautifully saturated image with great detail. Well done! May 17th
5 May 20 Comment Pete, Great image! I love the look of the weathered wooden boards on the path and hand rail. If sharpening of the entire image is too much mask the edges of the handrail and surrounding areas to reduce that effect. I would print the image. May 17th
5 May 20 Comment Mark, very creative. I never think of turning a flower into B&W because I'm usually shooting flowers with bright colors. Your vision to take a backlit subject and turn it into a B&W image really catches your attention and will make me search for similar photo opportunities in the future. Well done. May 17th
5 May 20 Comment After shooting wildlife images for 2 weeks it is nice to see something that wants to please you with their pose. Very attentive, a beautiful Maltese and great window lighting. May 17th
