83 Apr 21 Comment Jose, Wow. Very fun image and interesting composition. It's like one of those visual word games on Facebook. My eye found her right away because her arms do not continue the repeating pattern and texture of the pajones. I prefer the way her arms are arranged in the closer color image though. I like the color image a lot and I'm sure the landowner was also pleased. Back to the B&W image. The whole image is fascinating. Again, like a visual game that needs to be solved. The repeating texture of the beautiful pajones are a wonderful background for this long-distance aerial portrait. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Comment Lance, The first thing I thought about this composition is that it looks like the clouds have mimicked the shape of the tree or that the clouds are the fruit of the tree. I assume that at least unconsciously that was one of the things that drew you to take this image. I do not find the cut off tree branches a distraction and do think that my eye stays with the structure of the tree and its relationship to the beautiful clouds. The cloud's and tree's shape is repeated even where there are no clouds. The lighting is dramatic as is the image. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Comment Dianne, What a wonderful experience to photograph barrel racing events. It is a little soft, but at 1/3 sec shutter, panning, that would be expected. Anyway, I'm not an expert at panning and rarely have a subject on which it would apply. You captured the mostly static position of the rider while the horses legs are racing under her. I agree with Stephen that catching her coming around the barrel you might have gotten more of her face instead of a profile. I like the crop that Lance did as it does truly bring the viewer into the shot to experience the speed, action, danger. His crop frames the subject between that puff of dust on the left and the barrel on the right. Either way, it is an exciting image. Well done. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Comment Dirk, The white wood anemone is certainly a lovely subject. I can see why your eye and camera were drawn to it. The purple flower on the left is a distraction in color and worse in B&W. I tried reworking the color image, but that purple flower just had to go. First I cropped your image to a square. After converting it to B&W in LR, I used the green/gray slider to reduce the brightness of the leaves. I adjusted the overall exposure to limit blacks and open shadows some. I'm sure the wood anemone has a short life, but hope you'll be able to photograph it again. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Comment Debasish, I like your image of hard edged lines going so many directions that are then softened by the fog and the bike rider's shape and the round tires. Beginning from the image's bottom, a zigzag line begins at river's edge, continues with the pedestrian bridge's reflection, to the next shoreline, and around the point of the shoreline where the viewer's eye travels along the bridge's curving support and returns to the center of the image. I do agree with some of the group's suggestions that the bottom shoreline is too dark for the rest of the image. I tried my hand at reworking the image to lighten the closest shore and I used an adjustment brush along the bottom rail of the pedestrian bridge to darken the blacks. I also reduced the overall brightness some. Your vertical image cuts off a portion of the bridge's supporting curve lending a little tension to an otherwise calm composition. If you do this in a horizontal format, I'd keep the bottom lines and reflections. There is a lot to discover in this composition. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Reply Jose Luis, Agreed. More drama needed. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Reply Dirk-Olaf, Thanks for your observation regarding the weight of the cloud overwhelming the rest of the image. I cropped the cloud down slightly and I believe the image is significantly improved. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Reply Dianne, Thanks for your observations. Below I added more contrast which did darken the low and mid tones. I felt the highlights didn't have enough detail after that so reduced their overall brightness with an adjustment brush. See below. Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Reply Lance, thanks for the suggestions. See below Apr 18th
83 Apr 21 Comment Thank you all for your helpful observations. With those suggestions in mind, I reworked the image by adding more contrast and darkening the lightest tones through both a gradient and an adjustment brush in LR. The tone curve is set for 5 and 250 to keep both the blacks and whites from blocking out. The histogram stops at those points. Even with adding the contrast and darkening some of the mid tones I can still see detail in the darkest part of the mountain on the right side. I cropped the cloud some because I agree that it was too heavy and distracted from the rest of the landscape. Apr 18th
