Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
77 Oct 20 Reply Witta, thank you for the tip about looking at the histogram to see which colors are blown out. I'll do that and hope I remember that great tip in the future. Oct 20th
77 Oct 20 Comment Denise, Nice abstract of train detail. I prefer both the color version with it's soft shades of blue and gold and Original 1. To my eye, the final version is too flat and doesn't give the viewer any spot on which to focus. I tried Connie's suggestion for cropping to highlight the "Aztec Temple," but that completely changes the compositional proportions. The way you shot the image it is horizontally divided into pleasing thirds. So, I tried my hand in LR with increasing the contrast some.

I began with the color image adjusted the exposure, and then converted it to B&W. I applied a bottom to middle gradient to reduce the highlights and add clarity to the bottom of the image. I applied another gradient from top to middle to increase exposure, contrast, and highlights. I used the adjustment brush to lighten the hook in the top of the image. In the B&W settings, I pulled down the blue-gray level which darkened and separated some the textures on the bottom of the image. I also pulled up the orange-gray level so the gold tones would be lighter and provide more contrast. In exposure I increased the white level and then I added a -17 vignette to move the eye to the center of the image.

77 Oct 20 Comment Mary, I agree with Connie that the B&W version sets a mood. I like the diagonal compositional features and the shading from dark to light. Both of these set the mood. I do not see any "soft dreaminess." Her look, her eyes and the faintest smile, are very frank. I see both a challenge and an invitation in that smile and in her bold eyes. Your title really fits the image. As Witta suggested, you might try a slight gradient to tone down the brightest part of the book on the left and lighten the right side to expose a little more detail, but to me, your image is a winner. It gives the viewer much to consider.

77 Oct 20 Comment Connie, I definitely understand your desire to get out and see something new. Your iris is lovely with a pleasing soft color palette. You made the composition interesting by showing only a part of the flower. I agree that the frame detracts from the flower and the texture in the upper left does look a little grungy. But, I don't think the image is a lost cause. In LR I neutralized (using the White Balance eye dropper) and lightened the background so it doesn't compete with the flower. The change in WB also brightened the flower. I added a little vibrance to further brighten it and using the brush I added a little texture to the yellow and to the falls that are most in focus. I cropped just slightly so the bottom left fall goes all the way to the edge. Then I added a light vignette that I thought might give the image more depth and replace the frame. Oct 19th
77 Oct 20 Comment Witta, This is truly a beautiful image. The composition is wonderful. The edited version is soft and captures the exuberance of a young girl running through a beautiful field of lavender. To my eye, the brightness of the back of her dress gives her some separation from the landscape and highlights her very nicely. The original is lovely as well, and I couldn't resist seeing how close I could come in LR to what you created with Topaz filters. I reduced the contrast and lightened the shadows in the surrounding lavender. I used a bit of negative clarity and a little dehaze to give the photo additional lightness. It doesn't look like a painting, but because it has such a wonderful subject, it is another alternative. Congratulations on a beautiful image. Oct 19th
