96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Bob. Great edit! I love how your edit shifts the trees just slightly which creates a subtle yet distinct sense of symmetry re: the placement of the trees on the horizon. I have a soft spot for symmetry. I am also glad to learn another editing technique, thank you! Jan 24th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Dan. This is very helpful. I was wondering how exactly to remove small elements from images, so thank you! Jan 24th
96 Jan 22 Reply Hi Dan, nice edit! I think the removal of the trees is fine. I like how it brings the focus onto the ice volcanoes. Did you remove the trees by cloning the sky? Jan 24th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you, Dan. I am glad that the "visual path" (i.e. the zigzag "line" between the ice volcanoes) worked. Thinking ahead to when I return there next month (fingers crossed that there will be new ice volcanoes), I am thinking about if I should use the same lens (Sony FE 50mm 1:1.8) or a different lens (Canon FE 50mm 1:1.4), especially to address the DOF issue. I could also use a wider angle lens (Sigma 16mm 1:1.4) instead. Per your suggestion, I flipped the image so the background elements are on the left side. I am curious how the switched image looks compared to the original. Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Robert. I had never seen them before in my life, so they were pretty amazing to find and capture. That newness is what really drew me towards photographing them. I think their longevity really depends on the temperature and winter conditions. I haven't been up to Lake Ontario there again yet. But, I will be up again in February and can hopefully find some there then. Fingers crossed, as that will get me the opportunity to take more shots from more angles. Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Reply Hi Cheryl, yes, that is it exactly. For handheld shots, anything slower than about 1/200 sec. results in blurring. But, if I can lean my camera against something to brace it, I can slow it down to almost 1/80 sec. Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Comment Wow Bob, you capture the amazing scenery/topography of the Badlands. In your original edit, the background layers are sharp, but looked a bit blurred (as if you were flying overhead when capturing the shot). So, I like how Robert's edit focused of the red tones of the foreground and darkened the background a bit, which reduced that blurred effect. Great shot and editing, Bob! Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Comment Great image and edit, Gloria. I appreciate the calm, soothing colors of your shot. I agree with Haru and Dan that a simpler sky works well, especially since your focus isn't the sky, but rather the rocks below. I think everyone shared great insights re: identifying which rock is "yours" and focusing on it editing it/around it. Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Comment Wow, you captured some amazing shots. Kudos to all of your hard work. You definitely succeeded in creating a spectacular pano image of the city skyline highlighted by fireworks. The final image perfectly captures the city skyline as well as its reflection in the river. The location where you shot looks like a perfect place to get skyline and pano shots throughput the day. Great job! Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Comment I love the different layers and elements of your composition. The sunset sky is really perfect for this images because the sunset colors are reflected on the snowmobile perfectly. I also like how Cheryl's edit brings out more striking sky colors. The composition is very familiar with the rural scenery and rows of wooden fences. Beautiful shot and edit, Dan! Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Comment This is a beautiful photo. The colors/tones of the red, blue, and orange are almost jewel-like. I like how Cheryl's crop really keeps the focus on the mountain and rainbow. Great photo and edit, Robert! Jan 23rd
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Bob! Jan 20th
96 Jan 22 Comment Great shot, Haru. The autumn colors are very striking against the lush green moss and ferns on the rocks in the foregroundand background. Also I like how this edit also shows more texture/details of the twisted vine (?) I agree with Bev that the person looks not so grounded (i.e. hovering/flating a bit.) In the foreground. My eye caught what looks to be a line/edge of an overlay over the tree/in the upper part of the image. However, that could just be an optical illusion. I drew the line in purple on the image. Aside from that, beautiful shot and great edit! Jan 19th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Cheryl. I will look through my other photos from that trip to see if I have any similar to what you described. I know I took a bunch of photos from different angles, so I likely have one akin to what you imagined. I also agree that sunset would have been a better for shooting. In terms of the f-stop choice, my camera (Sony a6000) won't let me change it when I'm shooting in manual mode or program auto mode. It just chooses what it "thinks/decides" is best. When shooting handheld shots, I usually put my camera in manual mode so I can put increase the shutter speed (so my tremor doesn't make the shot blurry). I can change the shutter speed and ISO, but not the f-stop. It is a bit of a mystery to me. Jan 19th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Gloria and great edit. Yes, I really wish I could have caught the shot at sunrise or sunset, as the sky is a bit lackluster comparatively. I like your edit. The horizontal cropping makes the middle ice volcano look even taller, which I like (as it was actually quite a bit higher/taller than the others.) Jan 19th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Bob. Yes, all the tracks belong to different animals. A person could probably walk out to them. But, the risk of crashing through the snow/ice layer sitting just over the shallow part of the lake and/or actually falling/slipping into an ice volcano (and then getting stuck or falling into the frigid water) is
high. The diameters of these ice volcanoes were probably between 2.5 and 3.5 feet. So, unfortunately, it was/is too unsafe to investigate ice volcanoes up close.

96 Jan 22 Reply Here is the other edit. Jan 19th
96 Jan 22 Reply Thank you Haru. I agree, I wish the sky had more going on. I was tempted to play around a bit and add to the sky using Luminar 4. However, the focus of the image is the ice volcanoes. So, I didn't want to take away from that focus. Here are 2 edits, both with more of the brown color and less blue, to varying degrees. Jan 19th
