I like the contrast between the different textures (water, sky/clouds, trees, house). I also agree with LLoyd that the top of the pine tree is missing, but that's just a personal preference. I like the brightness of the sky/clouds, but the rest of the scene (trees, house) seems a bit darker or overcast. Maybe it's my eyes or personal preference (or both), but I just searching for more details, like more highlights/shadows of the trees in the background or more light/highlights/cloud reflections in the water (since it's such a bright sky). |

Your edits really bring out the different, contrasting textures and colors of the pods (rough, dark) and seeds (smooth, yellow). Great shot and perfect for the assignment. |

This is an interesting shot, as it seems to almost combine the two different scenes (lush, shady, green forest & bright, illuminated waterfall). I agree with Lloyd that perhaps the waterfall might be a bit bright or overexposed. The ferns and trees seem to be a little fuzzy. However, I would imagine doing that trek while carrying a tripod would likely have been out of the question. My first digital camera was also a Nikon Coolpix, so given that was the camera, I understand why you were trekking around without a tripod. Regardless, great shot of a place that few might rarely ever visit or see. |

This is a beautiful shot. Great range of colors/shades with crisp, clear details. I agree that this shot is spot-on. Great job! |

Wow, this image really pops! I love how the clear, colorful flower sculpture really contrasts the serene, cool sky in the background. I find it interesting that the two halves of the underlying sculpture - on which the flowers are growing - is slightly asymmetrical. I cropped the image just to see how the floral sculpture would look centered. I think it could look good in a number of different formats/aspects. My eye caught a lone bird to the right of the sculpture. That might be something to consider. However, it's not really a big deal. Great shot and really fun subject! |

Great job on capturing the beautiful colors and shape of the orchids. I also love orchids, but sometimes struggle with photographing them so that all the colors, shades, and shapes show up clearly in my shots. I would tend to agree with LuAnn about the background perhaps drawing one's eye away from the main subject, the orchid. Regardless, great capture of orchids in both your original and edited shots. |

Hi Lloyd, thanks for the suggestions as well as the edits. I like it with the leaves on the left cropped out. You also pulled out some great detailing of the brickwork. Looks great, thank you! |

Hi Jamie, thank you for your suggestion. I agree that the subject should focus on the buildings. |

Hi Margaret, great question. This was shot in Portland, OR. Thank you for the suggestion about using Transform to straighten the building on the left. I'll have to try that. In the meantime, here's the original, unedited image as a comparison. |

Hi Bev, not to worry, no offense taken. I know that this type of photograph isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea. I am glad that you like the older building on the right. I do as well. The original shot was a bit darker, so I lightened up the shadows so the architectural details are more visible. |

Great image. I really like the different textures of each element in the image, the concrete bridge, the rocky lake-bed, the pools of water, and the cloudscape in the background. I also like how the clouds in the background throw a shadow on the water in the background, which becomes lighter towards the mid-ground. As someone who personally loves symmetry, I really like how the walking path of the pier lines up perfectly with the water level of on horizon. Beautiful shot and great visual variety! |

Thank you for the suggestions. My remote shutter release is arriving tomorrow (yay for Amazon Prime). I will also have to try the camera timer as well. I agree that the pylon isn't such a big deal, but it would be interesting to try to get some more shots from a slightly different angle/location, that might capture more of the buildings in the background which are visible under the bridge. |

Thank you for your comments. I also wanted to crop more of the left side (i.e. the bridge pylon) and also saw that it would remove more of the illuminated buildings in the background, so I kept it. I will try to go back and get more photos later, and try to get some shots further away from/to the right of the bridge, so the pylon will be less prominent/visible. |

Great shot and superb edits. I like how you were able to enhance the different tones and textures as well as pull out more details of the La Sal Mountains in the distance. The retouched center (the mining operations) looks great and helps to keep the entire image consistent. Beautiful shot! |

Beautiful photo and great edit. I like how your edit pulled out more textures, tones and colors in the clouds. I agree with Zsolt that the muted tones of the grass and church are well-balanced with the bright, colorful sky. |

Personally, the original image conveys more of a mysterious feeling, like the environment/forest is intentionally keeping itself shrouded in mystery. The edited image, especially with the yellow colors visible on some of the trees, conveys more of a sense of brightness or candor, as if it is trying to show its true shapes and colors (despite the snow storm). I hope those descriptions make sense. Regardless, great job. I think that both images are beautifully shot and convey different feelings/emotions well. The clear outlines of the trees amid the haziness of the snowstorm is a wonderful contrast. |

This is a really interesting image to view, thanks to the crisp, sharp lines of the objects (trees, dock, structure) vs. the fuzzy softness of their reflected outlines. I can imagine this image would look good in both B&W or color. I agree that the tonality seems a bit flat. Since my eye is drawn to the images vs. their reflections, I just cropped the image to remove some of the lower portion of the water (that doesn't have any distinct reflections in it) and just tried to bring out some more of the different tones in the trees and building/structure. Great capture of a really cool scene! |

Hi Gerard, thank you for the suggestions. The edit looks great. I agree that cropping it just after the tall building on the right side of the bridge makes sense in terms of balancing the overall composition. I tried out the stacked images, which creates an interesting effect. I will definitely to play with that more. Here's the revised image, edited with stacked images. I tried to pull out some more details of the underside of the bridge. |

Hi Cheryl, thanks for the suggestions. The waterway is actually quite busy (usually until about 1 or 2 am, when it calms down). I took about 8-10 shots, and pretty much all of them had boat traffic passing through. Perhaps I will try on another night, later at night. I am thinking of getting a remote control shutter release because pressing the "shoot" button seems to slightly nudge the camera, despite it being on a secured tripod. |
