Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
80 Jul 21 Reply Thank you Karen for your comments. I suppose I could go back and take a picture of the wall without the truck and make a composite. But then, that is not my practice with street photography, things are as I find them.

80 Jul 21 Comment I enjoy the silhouettes of the group of friends against the background scene. I think you positioned the fountain between the figures perfectly, how fortuitous that the friends spaced themselves that way. I think that the image has a feeling of depth, with foreground, mid ground, and background elements well placed. I like that I can just peek over the top of the arc of the bridge and see some of the action along the waterfront; I see where the group is excited to go to, making a good story.

For me, there is a too much close foreground, I would consider cropping much of it out. I think a 16x9 aspect ratio would work well with this image as suggested by Stuart Caine. I would also consider toning down the white building that stretches across the middle of the image, for me it is a bit of a distraction from the action along the waterfront and completion of the story.

80 Jul 21 Reply Thank you for you comments Bev. I do appreciate them.

I agree with you that the truck bed in the lower right of the image is a big distraction that obscures an important element, the woman's foot; probably relegating this image to the not usable pile. I would find it difficult to clone in a natural looking background there. I do like the feel of what you have done with it.

When taking the image I tried to position myself so that the truck would not be in my image, I had seen the couple coming down the street and thought they would make interesting subjects. Just before they reached the space where I could get a clear shot, the woman made that expression and their stride was just right. A moment later it was gone. That's the way of street photography, we try to catch that perfect moment, but often it doesn't quite come together.

80 Jul 21 Comment This strikes me as depicting a peaceful late afternoon beach scene, possibly the man waiting for sunset. Or is this morning on the east cost; as a west coast person I would assume sunset on our beaches. The vey directional sidelight illuminates your subject well. I do not mind that we can not see the child, it looks like the man is quite enjoying the beach, though it does look like an unusual buggy for an adult. I think the man is positioned well in the image with plenty of space before him to gaze into. I like that there are disturbances in the sand in the direction of his gaze that contains me in the image, the larger of the disturbances leads me back to the man.

For me, I would like to see a little more color in the water. If you are working in photoshop, you could add a brightness layer and change the blend mode to multiply to intensify and darken the colors that are there, and masking off all of the sand so that area is not darkened. You might also try a a warming filter on the sand and man to give it an earlier morning look that is implied by the long shadows.

80 Jul 21 Comment I enjoy the graphic nature of this image, the repetition of the rectangle shape, large and small, throughout the image. I think that the primary colors work well together, bits of red to attract our attention, against the blue wall. Although the large rectangular space behind the runner only has a little yellow in it along the top, it somehow looks yellowish on my monitor, perhaps because it is in contrast to the blue of the building. The red of the runners trunks, the cup in the gutter, and the step around the corner form a nice triangle the leads my eye around the corner where I suppose the runner might go. The large white wall does pull my eye in that direction. I like the position of the runner, heading toward the light. For me, the large space behind the runner balances the light and dark in the image as well as implies motion and time. Well done.

There is very little that I would do to change this image. One subtle change would be to slightly darken the white wall along the edge of the frame if you want to lead the viewer's eye around the corner rather than drifting off the frame.

80 Jul 21 Comment The woman pose makes me think that she might be dispirited or distressed. We don't see her face, which is fine by me, it adds a bit of mystery to the image. I also wonder about her relation to bag with the flag in the it. I think that the flag being near the edge of the frame adds tension, reflecting tension in the woman. I feel a melancholy mood in this image.

For me, the yellow curb is a dominating element in the image, but is not significant to the story in the image. I would desaturate it a bit.

I think there is a cleaner way to clone out trash can and rails than trying to piece it together in the tight space between the woman's head and pole. Working on a separate empty layer, I would clone in sidewalk taking from the area on the left of the person, and paint it so that the lines in the concrete lined up, not worrying about covering up the persons head or other stuff in the background. Then I would make a mask and mask out any of the clone that coved the person's head. That way I do not need to worry about everything lining up when trying to work a tight space.

I think that the top and bottom of you image are not adding to the story and could be removed. I suggest trying a 4:5 aspect ratio.

I darkened the sidewalk and then brightened the rest of the image using a simple luminosity mask, trying to bring out the nice tones of her skin.
