80 Jul 20 Reply Thank you for your comments. I might have avoided the merger if I had been a fraction of a second earlier. I just was not fast enough to see and compose, the girl on the scooter was moving pretty fast. Anticipation is a big part of street photography.

80 Jul 20 Reply Thank you for your response. I don't know what I plan to do with my street photography. I generally do not enter them into competition, but usually show them as prints. I have contiplated a book or two, or collections of images, but don't feel ready to put together such collections. I am not very good at selection images to include in a collection. Jul 8th
80 Jul 20 Reply Thans Bill. The demonstration was indeed small, neighborhood march with a little over about 150 neighbors, not the more massive central city demonstration. I chose to close in on individuals for some of my images. Jul 8th
80 Jul 20 Comment I think this is is a nice portrait of a strumming balladeer. I like his colorful costume.

I think that the background of the original was very cluttered, I understand why you want to replace it.

For me, when an image is altered such as when the background is replaced, a key consideration is to make it look as if it has not been altered. The alterations should be difficult to detect. In this image there are several areas that are obvious that this is a highly altered image. I see places where the separation between the balladeer and background is not very clean. I see noticeable hazy areas over the balladeers strumming hand, holders, pants and boots. I think it would improve the image to take care of those detail by cleaning up the separation mask. ( See that you worked on some of these areas, but in the corrected image you posted I see additional areas that could use some attention.)

I also see that he noise content of the background and subject is different. That might no show up when projected at the resolution of the image submitted, but may become obvious if projected at a hight resolution of at print resolution. Perhaps applying a de-noise filter to the background before combining the image would help.

80 Jul 20 Comment I am enjoying the early morning warmth of this image. For me, the colors are eye-catching in their softness. I like the gesture of the woman reaching up and greeting the sky; the sky being a nice use of negative space. I think she is nicely positioned on the rocks.

I notice a fair amount of chromatic aberration in the lower right hand part of the image that can be easily cleaned up in ACR or Lightroom. For my personal taste, I find the red on the rocks a little strong, pulling my eye away from the rest of the image. I would de-saturate the reds in the darker areas of the image so that the sky is the star of the image. (In photoshop I use Hue/Desaturation red with blend-if set to impact only the darker parts of the image.

80 Jul 20 Comment For me, the gesture of the red headed woman matches your title and the gesture of woman sitting next to her appears to be sympathetic. I think this is a nice capture of a poignant moment, a view into the human condition.

I think the stone benches coming a line leads us straight to the women. The line of bricks in the road take me further into the image, where the road, trees, and stonework beyond the women give it a sense of place. I find the soft quality of light to be pleasing.

I think a little tighter crop from the left and top would bring us in closer to the women and still retain the since of place. Such a crop would also remove the sign (which may conflict with your story unless you want us to wonder why they are seated outside a hotel bar/restaurant.) I would consider darkening the stone wall to the left of the woman a little to make the women stand out more.

The color profile of the image is untamed. I notice that it changes color depending what software I view it with. If you are entering into competition, it is best to specify a color profile such as srgb. You don't know what color profile the software your club uses will display it with.

80 Jul 20 Comment There is certainly been a lot happening out on the streets over the last months even though we should be staying at home and isolating. It is hard no to go out and document these times when our customary life patterns have changed so much. I share your desire to document in these times what is happening close to us, with an occasional foray more distant. I think this image captures a sense of the times, protest and masks combined.

For me, the woman sitting is the focal point of the image, the place to start exploring the rest of the image. She is looking up at the speaker with the bull horn, who is addressing the crowd. Looking at the faces in the crowd, I sense a little uncertainty about what is being said, or is it just waiting for the march to proceed; I think this adds a little mystery to the image keeping us engaged. Whether to wear a mask or not could be a long discussion which I think I will avoid for the moment. At the few demonstrations that I witnessed, everyone, with few exceptions, wore a mask; I know it is different in different places.

I think the image is well balanced and well composed. I believe B&W was a good choice to keeps focused on the essentials of the image, the expressions on the faces. The only changes I would suggest is to crop off the bright areas at the top, and perhaps a little of the empty space off the bottom.

80 Jul 20 Comment I see in this image the tourists are enjoying a late afternoon relaxation watching boat traffic along the Grand Canal next to the Rialto bridge. A variety of boats are present, from Gondola cruisers, and the Vaporetto.

I think your main subject, the gondola, is well placed. I perceive that the tourists are looking out at the gondola going by, leading my eye in that direction. I think including the Rialto bridge, a well known landmark, as part of the scene definitely places the image. For me, the two motorboats plying along give a feeling of motion.

Some thoughts for improvement: The bright red shirts of the women brought and held my eye there, I would consider decreasing their brightness just a little so that their case more easily leads you to the gondola rather than competing with it.

The gondola appears to me to be in a darker part of the image. To make it a little more inviting to look at, I would brighten that area a little bit.

I agree with Stephen about cropping the bright dock in the lower right from the image. Just cropping out the dock cuts off the Vaporatto a bit and the building behind. I skewed the right side of the image a bit to remove the dock and in the process straighten out the leaning buildings behind the Vaporatto without loosing any image components. ( IT looks like you tilted the origional some, and may have skewed it to keep more of the bridge.)

Sharpening artifacts. This image appears to have about 3 pixel width unsharp masking applied leading to wide white or black lines around objects, which I find a little distracting. For this size image, I find that about a 0.5 pixel width un-sharpening is plenty and does not result in perceptible sharpening artifacts in most cases.

For shooting images Venice, I found that if you did not want all the traffic on the Grand Canal to shoot either very early in the morning until the cruse ships disgorge, or late in the evening when the everyone had decamped. There are still some gondolas out in the evening for those romantic sunset rides, but not so much in the early morning. The morning time is great for catching natives going about their work preparing for the onslaught of visitors.
