You always present good, interesting images. I find myself having much sympathy for the horse. He looks rather battered and forlorn. My only suggestion comes out of my personal preference. Try flipping the image. To me, that leads me easily to the head of the horse and not to his rear. It also does not let the bush hinder me as my eyes come in from the left. See my flip of the image. |

You have already received good advice. I can add nothing more.
I will say, I really like the image. |

I like the concept of the image, but without your explanation I am not sure I would have understood what story you are trying to tell. I remember advice I heard many years ago that said, "If your photographs are not good enough, you are probably not close enough." You may have, in this instance, overdone it. I feel a shot showing the two men involved, along with more of the market would better tell the story. |

Congratulations on being willing to experiment with something new. I am planning to start in the near future experimenting with close-up photography. You did not mention if you were on a tripod, or handholding. At f/4.0 you have a very shallow DOF. It seems not possible to get overall sharp focus on the rose. You would need to do some focus staking. The overly bright highlights on the edge of the center peddles are, to me, the biggest problem. I do like the B&W image from Lance. |

Good action. I see nothing wrong with the focus. If you are concerned about it, all I can suggest is a smaller aperture (f/8?) and a corresponding increase in ISO. Your shutter speed should be more than enough for this kind of action. |

Your council has prevented me from making a bad mistake. As already mentioned, I first entered the image I added to my first response in composition and was pleased with the fact it was chosen to become part of the Exhibit. But I feared the fact the knife handle went past the end of the frame would keep the image from doing even better. I then went back through my image file and found one without that problem. I hoped the new image would do better. I made that image my image for the month, hoping for comment. Your comment, and others helped me to see that it was not as good as my first choice. |

As usual, a very good B&W. I like the simplicity of the image and the framing created by the trees. The square crop is my favorite. |

Thank you for pointing these things out to me. I have another image file of this same setup that did score high enough for inclusion in the exhibit of a recent international competition. your suggestions indicate a better way for me to improve. |
