Lance: Thank you. I always look forward to your critic. My first problem was that I was not there at the best time of day for this photograph. It was mid-afternoon. I was shooting in aperture mode with auto ISO. As for the tree I removed, it appeared is if it was growing out of the large pot, much like a poorly composed portrait photo with a tree or pole in the background growing out of the head of the subject. I could not let myself not remove the tree.
I do the large majority of my processing in LrC and assume the "sponge" is similar to the adjustment brush. I have just recently started to use the tools in LrC to do the type of burning and dodging I used to attempt in my long ago B&W darkroom. I am also experimenting more with color toning. I recognize the temptation to go a little too far.
I have submitted to Group 91 an Infrared image I photographed at this location a few days prior to this shoot. It is B&W, but again I feel I left the image too dark overall. |

Dale: As I stated, I have never tried this but remember watching a video where this was done. I think it was done using the radial filter in a horizontal configuration and lots of feathering. Adjust brightness to level desired.
Worth a try. |

Steven: Thanks for your reply. Yes, the color is more what I think makes a more pleasing color, and not the actual color on that day. I gave thought to removing the chain, but decided it was not that important to do so. |

Thanks for your comments. Learning from sharing is what this is all about. I subscribe to the Adobe Photographers Plan for Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. The majority of my post processing is done in Lightroom Classic (LrC). I can never learn all of LrC, but I started with the basics and have continued to learn. So many video tutorials on line. |

Jennifer: This is an interesting image. The distortion adds to the feeling of height. I really like how you allowed just enough of the sun to touch the edge of the frame to produce a very interesting sun flair.
The buildings and shadows seem to have a blue tent. Did you add that in post processing? |

Dale: I really do like this image. You seemed to capture the mood you visualized. As for the light, perhaps you could use the adjustment brush to extend the glow of the light into the near dark sky. I have never tried that, but I have seen it done. |

Steven: Nice catch. The fact that you were able to get the shot while the bird was enjoying lunch gives the image extra interest. The eye seems to be sharp and bright. Well done. |

Cindy: I keep being drawn back to this image. It is very engaging. The shadow pattern from the trees are very interesting, and I no longer am troubled by the darkness of the shadows on the part of the house behind, and to the right of the main tree. This leaves only the bright grass area and perhaps the bright roof as a concern. You might try some creative cropping. Perhaps crop up from the bottom to remove some of the grass, and in from the left to remove part of the brightness there. The rest could be darkened some in LrC using either the Graduated filter and/or the Adjustment brush. Other editing programs will probably have similar tools.
I do look forward to seeing your future posts. |

Cindy: So good to have you in our group. I always look forward to seeing your posts. You have chosen an interesting, but challenging subject. If you took this photo while touring, which I assume is the case, then you may not have been able to select the best photography time of day to be there. The mid-day sun produced a very high contrast scene. Note the dark shadows covering the part of the house behind and to the right of the tree. Note also the "blown out" sun lit grass and very bright areas of the roof. If you had the option of time of day (which I doubt,) early morning or late afternoon would help with these problems. Even with your restricted ability to pick a better time of day, the intensity of the identified problems can be lessened in a good image processing program like Lightroom Classic.
I think you did well with the situation you had. Investigate the possibility of dealing with some of the issues in Post Processing. |

Lance: No intimidation. I found it a fun puzzle to solve. It did cause me to look very carefully at what you did, and that is good. I always benefit when you push me towards more creativity. |

Lance: There you go. Playing with our minds again. It took me a few minutes, but then the lightbulb went on and I saw the truth. I'll admit, you did make me think and kept me looking. Love the image. |

Lance: Thank you for reviewing my IR image. I too like the whites of the IR, but seem to have lost some in my attempt to darken the sky in order to add more interest there. I do very much value you suggestions and comments. |

Gary: Thank you for your critic. Yes, I agree that more separation is needed between the different layers of wall on the right. I did some work on that area, but more needs to be done. |

Lisa: Good to hear from you. You are missed. I gave some thought to cloning out the change, but finally decided to leave it in due to the fact this is a protected archaeology site and the chain seemed to be a part of the scene. However, I do like your concept. See my full color photograph of this area taken a few days later and from another viewpoint in Group 87. |
