Jay, I liked this shot in December and I still like it now. I did review my Dec. comments and I really wouldn't change them.
I'm just sorry that I screwed up and posted the image for the wrong month, and then wasn't able to get a new image posted. Please accept my apology. |

I always like your B&W photos and wish I could be as effective with my efforts at B&W. This is a good shot, but I don't think it is one of your best. Technically I think you have done this very well. Your focus and depth of field are nice and sharp with lots of detail showing. The lighting is good and I like the clouds in the sky and the mood that they add to the photo.
I agree with Dawn and Darcy in thinking more space on the top would help, and perhaps including more of the tree would add to the photo. I don't perceive any primary interest point in the photo and the way the front of the building slopes off to the upper right corner has the effect of drawing my eye out of the image, thus not holding my interest. I wonder if stepping back and taking the shot from a different angle might help. |

I appreciate what you are trying to do here Darcy. I think you have executed the technical aspects of this photo pretty well and you did capture a nice sunburst so, in my opinion, you were successful with that objective.
However I don't think the sunburst adds anything to the photo and by itself it doesn't create any interest. Also the rest of the photo seems to me to be pretty bland without any item of interest to keep me involved with it. But now that you have a good idea of how to capture a good sunburst you can start figuring out how to work it into your other photos. Keep on trying new techniques |

What's not to like about this photo? I like your asymmetrical composition with the mountain off to the side but dominating the photo. The colors in the sky add to the image and I think the floating ice along with the penguins on the rocks provide interesting detail. And then the three penguins on the snow in the foreground is a great finishing touch. Technically I think your lighting and focus is spot on.
As I'm always thinking of improving my B&W I was wondering what this would look in B&W so I though I would give it a try. I hope you don't mind. I like your color version better, but I think the B&W version is pretty good too. |

I like the symmetrical composition in the way you have centered the volcano with the foliage framing it. In my opinion the colors work well together and the clouds in the sky are a nice addition. And of course, your focus and depth of field is fantastic. You have gotten everything so sharp with good exposure and colors that, to me, this almost looks like a painting.
Just as a matter of personal taste, I am not comfortable with how close the foliage is in the foreground. It seems to crowd out the mountain a bit and makes it look insignificant. |
