That road along the the Umpqua river across the Cascades is a great place for waterfall pictures as there are several different falls to choose from. The Toketee Falls is the highest of them and this is a great shot of it. I think you have composed the image well by centering the falls and letting us get a sense of the height of them and I like that you have included the pool below the falls.
For me the lighting is a bit of a problem with this shot. However I must say that the lighting in our Oregon forests is always a problem and for the Toketee falls you have done OK. It seems you had a sunny day, which always creates bright and dark shadow areas that make choosing an exposure a nightmare. Perhaps if you did a HDR photo, using 3 or 4 shots at different exposure and them combining them the end product might be more impressive. Other than the exposure issue I think this is a great shot. |

Another one of your great B&W shots, between yours and Dawn's photos this month I'm going to have a really hard time getting my B&W skills up to a comparable level.
I like the high contrast in this shot and the way you show a lot of detail in the way the wood has been weathered. The composition with you having the grated area be the dominate area of the image is, for me, a positive in that it draws my eye into the image and makes me wonder what is behind there (or what was behind there when this was a populated town). And I think the graffiti is a nice touch. |

To my eye the way you have composed this photo is what makes it so good. The components of the river, hills on the horizon, then the clouds draw my eye straight to the milky way. I like that you have just a little color in the sky but the stars are still the primary items of interest.
For me the bottom of the frame is a bit too dark, but rather than increasing its exposure I cropped it from the bottom to eliminate the part I think is too dark, and I think it adds more emphasis to the sky and stars. I hope you don't mind and what do you think? |

I find this to be a very relaxing shot and it makes me think about hiking along the beach. I think the green of the foliage stands out very well against the dark tones of the rocks and waters. For me the composition is good as my attention stays on the foliage and the centering of it works well. The lighting is good and I like your sharp focus with good depth of field.
In my opinion I think the foliage is too close to the top of the frame and perhaps the image might look more interesting if you were able to include more of the rocks on the top. |

The hardest part of doing this Paul was getting my butt out of bed before 5:00am and then driving 15 minutes down to the bridge where I took the shot. This was also the first time I was using my graduated NDF so I'm really glad it worked out. |

As Bandon is only an hour and a half from my house I've been there a few times. But usually at sunset my wife and I are sitting in a restaurant, or driving back home. Now most certainly on my next trip we'll be hanging around and my wife will have to have dinner by herself. I really like this shot.
I think you made the right decision in converting this to B&W and, while I think it has nice soft lighting, I also think the B&W contrast works very well. The long shutter speed does great in smoothing out the water and I like the way the rocks are strong in the front and then just fade into the fog. Compared to this shot I really have my work cut out for me next time I head down to Bandon. |

I don't do night or Milky Way shots so I really don't appreciate the effort that goes into getting a shot like this. But I do admire how great it looks. I really like the composition with the dark lake and forest line, but not too dark so you can still see a little bit of detail. I think the reflection of the trees and Milky Way add a lot to the image. Your balance looks good to me with having the Milky Way be just off center and rising up from the lake. I also think the colors of the almost dark sky help make the Milky Way stand out more. I love it. |
