I have never done nighttime sky/star shots so I don't know how to evaluate them AND I'm not knowledgeable of what I think is a lot of effort to get a good shot. With that said I really don't know how to critique this photo - except to say that I really like it and wish I could take shots as captivating as this one. |

Darcy, I took this shot from Rowena Crest Viewpoint on the Oregon side of the Columbia. It's at the eastern edge of Columbia Gorge Scenic Area, which starts at the town of The Dalles and goes west until you are on the outskirts of Portland. It is on old US Highway 30, which is a VERY curvy road that goes up to the top of the gorge, but with LOTS of scenic views (makes you wonder how people back in the 1920's, 30's and 40's ever made the trip). As you proceed west on Old Highway 30 there is just waterfall after waterfall, including the rather famous Multnomah Falls. |

The serenity of this photo is what I find most appealing. It just encourages me to sit down and meditate with some positive thoughts, and for me evoking various feelings is what makes for a good photo. I think the symmetrical composition is spot-on while I like the sea gull on the side which adds to the interest. I believe you are making very good use of the empty space of the calm waters and empty sky. Finally I like your even lighting and sharp focus and depth of field throughout. |

I agree with Neil in that I like the contrast created with the abrupt cliffs with the flatness of the valley on the right. I think you have just the right focus and depth of field to bring out the detail that helps make this photo.
For me, I'd like to see a bit more intensity of the greens. I also think more haze reduction would help. Finally I agree with Paul in that the road and cars distract from the nature impression with the cliffs, but not sure how you could mask them out. |

I like this as a study in contrasting textures, with the dried ferns on the bottom giving a mat like effect and then the vertical lines created by the trees reaching for the sky. I think you have really good focus and depth of field which make the contrast more prominent.
Perhaps it's time for me to calibrate my monitor but the overall scene look a bit underexposed to me and the ferns on the bottom look like a dull brown, not yellow as the others mentioned. Still I think it's a great study. |

Looking at the comments from Paul and Jeffrey I don't think there is anything I could add. For me this image has "over the top" interest with the two raccoons looking straight at the camera. I think your focus, depth of field and lighting are very good. I do agree with Jeffrey in that I think the image would be enhanced if you cropped from the right to eliminate the branch in the upper right corner and would center the raccoons a bit more. |
