Mum's are important, I'm glad that your Mum would have been OK with this shot. |

I like how you've used high contrast with the B&W to create an image that "captures" my eye and for me it is augmented with your tack sharp focus. The angle you've used is, in my opinion, good in that it draws my eye up from the bottom into the middle and the front of the hotel.
I see it that you have two main points of interest, the hotel and sign along with the wagon however for me I'm not envisioning a story line that ties them together. |

I like the how you always find a way to have your photos tell a story, and this one is no exception. I make me wonder what the cowboys are thinking. I think your composition is good with the two cowboys as the primary interest point and I like how you have them centered in the frame. The details of the clouds also are a positive element for me. And, as always, I think you make excellent use of B&W.
Like Dawn, I think the cowboy on the far right is distracting and I believe it would help if you cropped from the right to eliminate him and I think that would help bring more attention to the two cowboys in the center. |

Another one of your exceptional photos Mark. First, I like the strength of the mood which it creates for me with the intimidating rock bed in the foreground that you have in sharp focus and then with the ridge in the background that you have obscured by the clouds. I think your choice of B&W is excellent and I like the way you are using high contrast. I also appreciate that you have the ridge lines of the rocks in both the foreground and background going diagonally across the image which for me gives the impression of more unknown out to the right. Good job, I like it. |

I agree with Darcy in thinking that the way you have the lines to draw the eye into the picture is a positive. I like the colors and the way you have brought out the clouds in the sky.
Your focus looks a bit soft to me and I think the photo could benefit with a bit more depth of field. While I like the way the line of the vine row draws my eye into the photo I don't see it leading me to any specific item of interest. I think the post in the foreground is a bit too strong for the overall image and I wonder if it might be better if you moved toward the right so you could have started out with the first vine.
p.s. Dawn got me thinking about my days as a mountain climber and now you have me thinking of my years working at a winery/vineyard (where the owner had studied photography under Ansel Adams). |

I think this is a GREAT shot; and again you're making my mind go back to my mountain climbing youth. I like the symmetry in the composition; both the vertical with the positioning of the mountain, and the horizontal with the reflection. I think you've made good use of the morning light and, to my eye, the focus is "tack" sharp throughout.
In my opinion I think the horizontal middle, along the shore line including the reflection and the lower part of mountain could use a little more exposure. |

I've been to Joshua Tree and I agree with you regarding how hard it is to capture in pictures; however I think this photo does pretty good. I think you have captured a sense of the vastness of the area and its desert nature. For me the colors work well with the yellow brown of the foreground and the plain brown of the hills in the background against the blue of the sky. I like your composition with the trees in the foreground standing out and then with their trunks taking my eye up into the top of the frame so I can appreciate the way the scene goes deep. |
