For me another one of your impressive B&W shots that encourage me to work more at improving my luck with B&W. I think your darkening of the clouds works well in creating an ominous mood for the image. In my opinion the focus is very sharp with good depth of field which I think adds a lot to the photo. I also appreciate the high level of contrast present. This image, in my mind creates a "story" about a incoming storm, and I like it.
Having read Mark's comment about the space on the right side I share his ambivalence about should it be cropped in from the right, thus highlighting the boat in the center, or is it just fine the way it is. Either way I think you have a great shot. |

I like the overall composition with the shrub and cactus together sticking out of the snow and having it presented in a symmetrical way. I think your focus and depth of field are good, providing lots of detail and I also believe the lighting works well.
For me I think a bit more color saturation of the green might enhance the image along with some higher contrast. I am also of the opinion the the cactus at the top of the image doesn't add much and is a bit distracting. I agree that a lower angle might help, but at my age I understand the issue of being able to get up again. |

In my opinion this photo is really telling a story, and for me that is one of the first things I look for in a photo. I like the composition in the way the group of "twirlers" are positioned in the frame and your cropping to keep them and their rifles as the main item of interest. To my eye the focus is share with good depth of field, which I believe is key to this kind of photo. I also agree with Dawn regarding the angle from which you took the shot. Good Job.
The background is for me a bit busy and therefore somewhat distracting, but those are the kinds of things one must work with when taking shots like this. Good for you in going for it even with less than ideal surroundings; too good of a shot to pass up.

Dawn, I really like this image and I'm impressed by the way it makes me feel as if I'm in the scene, not just looking at it. I think you have done a great job of capturing what winter is like in that environment. And for someone who struggles with B&W I'm extra impressed with what you produced. I think you lighting is good with the way you can see the depth of the grove of trees while having them fade into the background.
Like Mark I wonder about having the tops of the trees in the foreground cut off (and I'm still unsure about that in my mind). Darcy's idea of making a triptych for me is a nice additional decorative idea.

Mark, in my opinion you always seem to have a way of bringing out the "dramatic" of a scene, and this is no exception. I think the original is pretty good by itself but then your final image highlights the dramatic aspect of the falls. I prefer the final image a bit more because of its directly showing us the power of the water as it falls. By minimizing the green and only having the two dominate tones of the black/gray of the rocks contrasted with the white of falling water I think you have created a stronger image. In my opinion the technical aspects are pretty good and I think the impact of the image would override any technical items, if I could find them. Great job I like it. |

I am captivated by the mood that this photo creates with the mist rising off the water and the boats and fishermen silhouetted against the darker background. I think your lighting along with the reflection off the water adds much to the image and the mystique. I agree with Paul about the contrast and also along with the potential of cropping from both the top and bottom. |

Thanks Darcy. I like your crop better than mine. |
