93 Aug 22 Comment I like the way you have worked with the lighting on this photo. For me it is dark enough for the stars to come through while have a nice "silhouette" of the tree and keeping the detail and texture of the tree bark visible and still having a bit of light on the horizon. The composition of having the tree set off center in the frame and keeping lots of sky to show the stars works very well for me. I think you did a great job. Aug 22nd
93 Aug 22 Comment I have also been one of the lucky ones to see Denali on a clear, cloudless day and it is hard to capture the grandeur of that mountain. It looks to me that you have done that with this photo. I like the composition along with the way you have cropped it from the top. The framing with the trees on the side works well for me however I would be inclined to crop in a little from each side so there would be less tree and the Denali would be more pronounced. For my taste I'd like to see a little more brightness for the overall image. Overall - great shot. Aug 20th
93 Aug 22 Reply Mark, I really appreciate your comments and you have given me lots to think about, which is great as I'm trying to improve my B&W skills. For this particular shot I would have had to do some serious wading if I wanted to move to the left. Next time I'm down there I'll be sure to move around more to take the various angles into consideration (multiple visits is easy for me as it's only 1 1/2 hour drive from my house). And the white on top of the rocks is all quano as these rocks provide a rookery for sea birds. Aug 17th
93 Aug 22 Comment What stands out for me with this photo is its composition which, for me, exemplifies how proper combination of simple elements can create a fantastic image. I have to agree with Dawn's comment as you have the cliff on the right of the image and then they are layered back in a way that they draw my eye into the photo. The use of the curved line of the road works well for drawing me into the image and keeping my eye there. I also have to agree with Darcy regarding your excellent use of the soft colors and how they work together. While one might consider the sea and sky as "negative" space I like that there is enough texture with the clouds and soft waves to give them a simple structure. Great shot, and in my opinion a prize winner. Aug 14th
93 Aug 22 Comment I like the way you have captured the intensity on the face of the pasta maker, for me that is what makes this photo. I also think you have made good advantage of the lighting with the most light on the "work at hand" while still maintaining good lighting on the worker's face (but I do agree with Neil and Darcy that a slight bit of more light on the face could be beneficial). For my eye the focus is very sharp and spot-on and I like that the background is also in sharp focus as it defines the environment for the activity.

I did find the brass item on the right side a bit distracting so, if you don't mind, I took the liberty of cropping it out.

The only real problem I have with this photo is that it makes me want some pasta, which I can't have because of my diabeties.

93 Aug 22 Comment Neil, now you are moving into my territory - the wet coastal forest of the Pacific North West. And based on this photo you are forcing me to "up my game". I think this is a great shot. Because of the wet soil fallen and uprooted trees are common in these forest, and for me, this photo has captured the essence of them. I like the way you have framed the image with the underside of the root system dominating the frame while you still leave some of the background to create a border. The sharp focus and lighting on the root system, in my opinion, highlights the intricate detail and allows us to see the complexity of these roots. The deep color of the roots contrasted with a bit of green from the surrounding ferns works well. While I like what you've done I also appreciate the adjustments that Mark has made. And finally, I think it's great that you included the new trees growing out of the top of the fallen root ball, something else that is common in our wet forests Aug 12th

96 Aug 22 Comment Great shot Dan! I was at that beach several weeks ago and I didn't get any shot like that. I'll have to work more on keeping a creative eye open. Aug 20th
