This is another one of your great B&W photos that encourage me to step up my game and do more B&W for myself. I like the composition with the placement of the shack a bit off to the right and leaving space for the dead tree to the right; I agree with Dan that it adds to the photo. I am also taken by the way you have the sky lighter on the left side of the photo and it then moves to the darker sky on the right, it makes me imagine a storm coming and how this shack has weathered many storms. As I look at technical issues I see nothing that, to my mind, needs improving. Great Job, as always with your B&W's |

This photo makes me wonder "why is that chair there" and thus it makes me start thinking about a story behind the photo. And in my opinion a photo that makes me think is a good photo. I think your bringing up the exposure and making the blue of the chair stand out more helps the photo. I like the composition with the placement of the chair as it makes me look to the right and more into the scene. I think the lighting is good and you have nice focus throughout. |

I like this picture, I think it is nice and relaxing. The colors work well together and in my opinion bring a brightness to the scene that draws me into it. I agree with Mark in that I think it is an image that evokes a bit of an emotional response, which I consider positive.
I am having a bit of trouble identifying the primary item of interest. I agree with Paul in that it seems to be the gate, however I see it as being out of focus and, with the flowers in the foreground in sharp focus my eye is drawn to them. I think if you were to crop up a bit and in from the right it would bring the gate more to the center, and thus more prominent. However I still think the gate should be in sharp focus and the photo would benefit from more depth of field. |

Another vote for this being a really great shot! Like the previous comments I had to search a little to find the gecko, and then I was impressed that you got this shot. I like the very sharp focus on the gecko and then the softer depth of field so that my attention stays with the gecko. The coloring works well for me and I like the way the rust spots on the gecko show up and help bring my eye to him. While I think overall the lighting is good, in my opinion the lighting in the upper right corner could be toned down a bit. Overall I think this is a great shot and as Paul noted contest worthy. |

Mark, I see your point about including the people and generally I agree with your position on this. However when I took this shot I though it didn't have a prominent point of interest which I think the people added, so I took the shot with them in it. (Besides, I was with my wife and she didn't want to walk down on the beach to put them behind us). I see your point and I'll work on leaving the people out when it makes for a good image. And since that location is only about 1 1/2 hour drive from my house I'll be trying again soon to see if I can do better. |

Dawn, I think this is a great shot. I like the way you have the waves crashing up against the two rocks in the center as they create an action element that draws my eye into the photo. And I must echo the previously comments relating to all the positive features of this image. I like the way you've made great use of the lighting from the Golden Hour with the way it brings out the color of the rocks. I also agree that your focus and depth of field are right on. Great job, you've given me a goal to strive for.
(By the way Paul credits me with providing a lead with my seascapes, but that is ONLY because many of the great beach shots available in the "Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area" are closer to my house than my local grocery store, so I can do more trial and error. You had to work for this shot and I think it really paid off.) |

Mark in this photo, as in just about all your photos, you have a way of adding a simple element that adds something that brings the eye to it and increases the level of interest for the photo. I agree with Dawn as you have done that with having your friend walk into the photo. I like the composition with the wall on the left being nicely lit and contrasted by the wall on the right being in the shadow. I think the two walls provide a nice study in texture and the lines of the rock formation on the right helps bring my eye down into the photo. I think your post processing is well done in bringing out the colors of the scene. I see Dawn's point about the blue shade in the lower portion of the frame, but for me I like it and I think it goes well as a contrast to the warmer colors in the rest of the image. |
