Paul, for June I'm posting a seascape just because you asked. And FYI I took the shot at one of Dan Mottaz's favorite locations for taking his seascapes |

I've driven along CA 160 and crossed the Antioch bridge many many times however I have never perceived it quite like this; you must have a much more artistic eye than me. Per your title it is, in my opinion, the clouds that make this photo and I like the way you have them in sharp focus with lots of detail. I think you composed this well by including the ground in the foreground with the bridge providing a bit of a interest item and then having the band of cumulus clouds above the ground.
I think the clouds at the top are too dark and underexposed, which I find distracting. I that regard I like the cropping that Mark did. You have power wires running through the photo just above the ground and at the bottom of the first line of clouds which I find distracting. I know it's a lot of tedious post processing but I think it would help to erase them. I also find the smoke stack from the steel mill distracting and I don't think it adds to the photo |

The two things that strike me most about this photo is the very sharp focus and depth of field, which allows me to see lots of detail, and the high level of color contrast with the reddish orange in the foreground, the grayish white in the background and then the color of the geese and duck in the middle. I like the way the reflections in the water are distorted which for me creates a higher level of interest. The apparent random positioning of the duck and geese adds a bit of disorder to the image and for me also increased the interest. While this is not an abstract image the composition and seemingly disoriented positioning of the key elements does make me think of it along the lines of an abstract. I like it. |

Mark, you are too modest about your photos. I read what you said about this "not being competition quality" and as a result I can see the issues you raise. However the first thing I try to consider when looking at a photo is artistic/interest generating features and I think this photo has it in spades. I don't consider the flaws you mention as being significant in regards to the overall impression of the photo.
I like the way you have the light coming in from the upper right and then taking my eye down to the water and foliage in the lower left. I think the bright portion of the water, rocks and foliage when contrasted with the darker section of the forest adds a lot to the sense of enchantment of this forest scene (and makes me think, perhaps elves really do exist). I also see a lot of color saturation which in my opinion adds to the impression of this image, as well as your sharp focus and significant depth of field. I can see why you like this photo, and thanks for sharing it with us. |

This photo leaves me with mixed feelings, I like it but I'm not comfortable with it. Perhaps what makes me uncomfortable is that the reflection is a little distorted by the uneven surface of the water. But with that said it makes me think more about just what it looks like and I think creating that sense of wonder makes this, in my opinion, a more impressive expression of art. And art doesn't always have to be clear, good art can also make you wonder, which is what this photo does for me.
On the technical side I like the use of negative space with the snow bank and the texture you have included with the snow and I like the composition with the reflected image centered in the water and the way it brings my eye to it. I also think your use of the low key lighting and exposure add to the sense of the image. Great job, and thanks for making me think more of the artistic elements of the photo. |

I see a lot to like in this photo, such as the sharp focus on the hummingbird and flower with the blurred background which I think really makes the subject stand out. I also like the high key color contrast with the bright flower and the soft greens of the foliage, background and the hummingbird. I like your composition with the positioning of the hummingbird and flower and the way you have cropped the image to include one flower, thus my eye isn't distracted by the other flowers. Great job!
Of course we all have varying perspectives and I wonder if a bit tighter cropping might change the image perception. Just my opinion as shown below. |

I agree with Dawn as to the way you have composed this photo. The gnarly tangle of the roots in dominating the lower portion of the image immediately capture my eye and then their lines lead me up to the trunk, bringing me to see the green foliage. I think this is a very creative, and out of the ordinary, composition. I also like the way the lacy screen of the leaves provide a nice texture to the upper portion. For me your focus and lighting is good through out the photo as I can see nice detail everywhere. I Like it.

Mark, you are in luck. I can load images thru the 7th, and I got this one with a few hours to spare. So I've been able to load the original and final for you. |
