First, a couple of general comments. I find it interesting that half of our photos this month are in B&W as to me it shows how we as a group are working to push our art, good job everyone. I made a resolution to get my comments in sooner so I'm not influenced by everyone else, but so far I'm not doing a good job at that.
Overall I like this photo as I think it provides a good impression of what the large farms/ranches in the West look like. The lighting works well for me with good exposure throughout and a nice level of contrast. I appreciate the well defined clouds in the sky as I think they contrast nicely with elements below them. I tend to agree with the comments about the image being busy and I also don't think the bales on the side add to the story being told.
Great job Paul, and while I think my B&W is getting better yours and Dawn's photos show that I still have a lot of improvement to work on.
p.s Paul, I had Dan and his wife to my house for dinner last week and he sends his best regards. |

When I look at a photo I first deliberately try to determine what is, for me, its "artistic impact" before I start to considering the other aspect of the photo. Mark, for pretty much all of the photos you submit I consider that "artistic impact" to be very high. I then try to consider the elements such as composition, contrast, focus / depth of field, color etc. to see how they contribute to that "artistic impact".
I think your composition is good with the hoodoos in the foreground creating a base while the close cliffs on the side work to draw my eye to the center and the "gate" to the scene beyond it. I also believe that the lighting works well in creating interest with the well lit hoodoos and the shadows on the wall of the right cliff, and again this brings my eye to the center and out to the valley beyond the canyon. Great Job |

I like this photo as a example of combining different textures with the water coming over the falls and the surface of the rocks above. I think the choice of shutter speed works well as it only partially blurs the flow ow water and giving a combined sense of stop action and along with partial smoothing of the water. In my opinion the lighter color of the racks contrasts well with the darker color of the waer going over the falls. The inclusion of the green of the foliage works well for me.
I would like to see a more pronounced primary point of interest and, in my opinion, the depth of field could be a git stronger. |

Welcome to the group Dawn, and I have to say that for your first submission you have set high expectations for your work. To my eye the composition works well and I like the framing you've done with the branches across the top. I think this photo has good elements of contrast that make it work well as B&W. I think your post processing worked well to highlight the key elements that make this photo a stand-out |

I see your point about exposure bracketing Dawn, but as I was doing this for an assignment and that option wasn't available to me. And as my tripod was kind-of in the middle of the street I didn't want to take more time than needed, fortunately our little town doesn't get a lot of traffic after dark. |

I like the way you have sharp focus on the duck with the grasses in the background providing a nice bokeh. The log he is standing on, in my opinion, makes for a nice strong base and gives the image stability. The way the coloring of the duck stands out, for me, adds strong impact to the photo.
I do agree with the other comments about having the duck more to the left so that he is looking into the frame.
Overall I think this is a really good photo |

Mark, I like what you did with my photo (mostly) and I want to thank you for the work and analysis you put into your review. Please continue to "tweak" my images all you want as I am always learning a lot from you. I like the way you cropped from the left side, I'm so-so about the cropping from the top however I like having the entire "Bridgewater" sign showing on the left, but that's just my preference. Finally, I agree with you in that I think this photo works better in color, I chose B&W because I'm trying to improve my skills with B&W and when I get a shot that looks like it might work I'm inclined to give it a try. |
