I like the way you have used the light and shadows to highlight the vastness of the scene. I agree with Jeff about how the colors work well as the reds of the rocks dominate but having just a touch of the green from the foliage adding some contrast to the image. I like the composition with the buttes standing out in the foreground and having the mountains in the distance provide a background. Great photo.
My eye perceives a bit of haze as it moves further back in the scene and I wonder if that could be removed a bit with post processing. Like Jeff, I thought there was a bit of noise but as I'm not familiar with Topaz I can't comment any further on that. |

Paul, you've produced another great B&W that motivates me to work harder at up'ing my game for B&W. What strikes me most is the way you have used sharp contrast bring out and highlight the detail in the clouds and the snow capped peaks. Having the bit of mist above the water and the low clouds resting on the top of the trees really adds to the positive feeling that the image give me. The composition good, in my opinion, with the way you have the river coming in from the left and leading my eye up to the mountains.
The rocks in the lower right of the river seemed to be as little lacking of purpose there by themselves. It made me wonder if cropping from the bottom so they wouldn't just be in the middle of the river provide a different perspective. |

This photo really has a positive first impression for me; and that doesn't diminish as I continue to look at it. I like the way you have used negative space around the trees to highlight and bring the eye to the detail of the branches with their lacy presentation. For me your post processing has been successful in bringing out the contrast and highlighting those elements that you stated as important to you. |

I consider this photo as falling into the photo journalism / documentary category and am reviewing as such. I think it does a good job in showing how dominating (and potentially damaging) the smoke from a forest fire can be. While I see Jeff's point cropping from the bottom I think that including the gulls resting on the mud flats helps to provide a comparison with the peacefulness in the foreground in contrast to where the smoke is engulfing the hill side. But then I agree with Michael that it is your choice as to what part of the story you want to emphasize. I also agree with Jeff on working with dehazing. |

I like this scene, it makes me wish I was about 60yrs younger so I could enjoy a backpacking trip there. I like the way the stream leads up to the small waterfall and I appreciate the way the cool colors and low contrast lighting works to create a relaxed image. The focus looks sharp to me and helps to bring out what I see as lots of nice detail in all of the foreground.
I'm not sure that the mountains in the background add that much to the photo and perhaps would cropping from the top help keep attention on the waterfalls. I agree with Jeff regarding boosting contrast and perhaps increase color saturation a bit. |

I like the sharp overall crispness to this photo. The lighting is good, in my opinion, in that the main points of interest are well light and you can see all the detail while still projecting the early dusk impression. For me the focus is well done with excellent depth of field throughout the image. I think the colors work well with the sky and water colors contrasting positively with the rest of the picture. I also like the use of leading lines and the triangles formed by the support cables of the bridge.
The thin line of clouds across the top just hit the top of the bridge towers and I consider that distracting as they lead my eye away from the bridge itself. I think the overall image is a bit off balance as the boats and buildings on the left provide nice visual weight the the darker space on the right, in my opinion, don't provide anything of balance on that opposite side. Still, a very good photo. |
