Dan, there is a lot to admire in this photo and I'm not sure I have the skill to adequately evaluate them. What I react to first is the impact created with the diffused light and the rising fog which gives me a sense of mystique for the scene. I think you've done a great job with the composition and the placement of the elements, specifically the reeds in the lower right corner and the reflection they create on the water. The tree line helps to create a good separation between the water in the foreground and the sky in the background. I like that you have lots of negative space AND it is used, for me, to excellent advantage in emphasize the key elements.
And finally, I think all the positive comments submitted by the others are right on and well deserved. |

Jerry, I like the way you used the available light (As I do a lot of photo taking in a coastal rain forest I appreciate the issues with low light). I also think the placement of the two points of interest, the fallen leaf and the arching plant, work wonderfully for you. The additional effort you put into post processing has, in my opinion, gone a long way in creating an artistic image with a sense of story (seeing the shamrocks, my mind has me thinking of a leprechaun coming up to pick them). The vignetting helps my eye to stay focused on the central points of your image. Great job ! |

Darcy,
Your photo has a good impact on me as it makes me feel a bit in awe of the vastness of nature. I've not done much night photography and I have never seen the Aurora so I don't have an idea of the problems involved in photographing them so I'll leave the technical critique to the other, more qualified, members of our group. I like it. I like balance with the sky and the ground below and I appreciate the reflection in the water. To me its a little dark but that is a positive for me as it helps create more of a mood. Guess I'll have to go out and try some night photography now that you've given me a good example. |

Jean,
There is a lot for me to like in this photo, and I agree with the comments that preceded mine. What impresses me most is the composition with the layering of textures and colors, with the smooth blue water, the brown grasses above that, then the green of the band of trees, followed by the brown and whites of the snow capped mountains, and then topped to the blue of the sky. Good Job
The only change I might recommend would be to crop up from the bottom a bit to eliminate the stretch of grass on the bottom right, allowing the blue of the water to come all the way across the bottom |

Here you go again Paul, raising the bar for me to reach when I start trying my luck at B&W. I think this is a great image with a lot of artistic content. The composition for me is very good with the larger "mass" of the herd about two thirds across the frame and leading my eye to the right along with the herd as it moves to the right. I like the way the trees create a background above the herd and the grass is, for me, a nice contrast in the foreground. I agree with Michael that the machinery in the foreground is a very good addition.
I have made a few attempts at B&W since seeing your work but boy, you sure demonstrate how much I have to learn before I can share anything. I love this pic |

Michael, Here on the Oregon Coast there are just times of the year where if you want to take pictures you have no choice but to go out in wet and windy weather. And for some of the rocky parts of the shore that kind of weather can really make for some great images - a skill I'm still trying to develop.
For post processing I tried to sharpen the focus as I think it's a bit soft; after I did as much sharpening as I could I then made an "artist's decision" that the soft focus added to scene with the hanging moss. I also did a little work at creating a bit more contrast and enhancing the colors in the green channel. |

This image leaves a positive impact on me as it encourages me to sit on the bank and drink in the scene. I think the composition is well done with the two trees placed in the center and with their reflection in the water they create a nice point of interest for me. I also think the image is well served with the clouds in the sky providing texture and with the full depth of field that lets me see everything in great focus. Great image; I like it.
For me (or perhaps it's time to calibrate my monitor) the over all image seems a bit dark as I would like to see all the colors a little brighter and with a bit more pop. |
