31 Aug 20 Reply Thanks you for the compliment Ed. Adjusting the contrast with infra red, for me at least, is trickier than with traditional black and white. More control of tones is available with the color sliders (similar to converting a color image with the black & white adjustment layer in Photoshop). It has something to do with how the RAW file is stored with a converted camera like the one I use. Aug 17th
31 Aug 20 Comment Thank you John and Ella. I appreciate it. Aug 15th
31 Aug 20 Reply No need to apologize Ian, I prefer an honest evaluation ever anything else. I was trying to work with how the light was so variable in the grass and the few leaves that were present. Obviously it didn't work out. Maybe I'll try again with B&W film and scan the negative instead of infrared. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanks for the honest evaluation, I appreciate it. 31 Aug 20 Comment For me personally, this is an odd and somewhat distracting composition. The silhouetted tree is nicely framed but the partial view of the building pulls my eye away. Personally, I would prefer to see more of the building in order to place the location in context to the entire image. Aug 10th
31 Aug 20 Comment Excellent image of the desert Ella. There is nothing that I can suggest to improve it. Aug 10th
31 Aug 20 Comment A very powerful portrait Paul. Excellent use of selective focus to isolate the face in front of a slightly blurred background. I agree with you that this image says a lot about his experiences in life. Aug 10th
31 Aug 20 Comment To me, the caption on the hat says it all. The only changes I would make would be to clone out a pair of distractions along the edges that pull my eye away from the action. Very nice job Ian. Aug 10th
31 Aug 20 Comment Very striking image Peter. I am curious about what the source of light is reflecting off the lake. The aurora is at a different angle and nothing in view lines up with the reflection. Excellent post processing. Aug 10th
31 Aug 20 Comment Nice silhouette against the clouds in a field of flowers. Would be interesting to compare to the original color image. Well done. Aug 10th

93 Aug 20 Reply Thank you for such a thoughtful reply Dan. So far, all of my stitched panoramas have been done hand held instead of on a tripod like I know I should. I could use a longer lens, probably a 135mm, but I doubt I could accurately line up a second row of images. The result would be some areas with no information which would be very frustrating to me. While there is a substantial amount of distortion in this image, it doesn't annoy me that much, and the results are better than the same view with my 10-24mm lens.

What has been more enjoyable for me is to "cut up" the image and print smaller sections in a triptych fashion. So far the reviews by family and friends on which is "better" has been entertaining. I would thoroughly enjoy hearing Paul discuss his 90" version versus my undersized 27" version.

93 Aug 20 Reply More often than not I have the camera in portrait orientation. This maximizes the amount of foreground to sky distance that makes the final crop much easier. It takes a few more images to encompass the entire panorama but, in my opinion, produces a much better stitched image to work with. The final orientation all hinges on what you decide to keep in the image. It can be a horizontal rectangle, or a square, or a vertical rectangle, or even an ellipse if you use a layer mask. For some good examples and instructions, see if your local library has "The Art, science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography" by Glenn Randall. ISBN # 978-1-937538-47-7 published by Rocky Nook. 93 Aug 20 Comment Very nice image of the beach. Reminds me a lot of the Outer Banks along the east coast (no mountains in the background there). The sidelight on the wood definitely helped bring out the grain. Aug 10th
93 Aug 20 Comment I agree with Dan, this image is not melancholy but is much more introspective. I have taken may hikes in the mountains and walking along a path such as this, I am usually reflecting on past experiences in life. This image brings back many memories of the good things in life that I have enjoyed. Aug 10th
93 Aug 20 Comment Excellent image of the Milky Way. Including the rocks in the foreground provides a solid foundation for the stars. Aug 10th
93 Aug 20 Comment Very well done Dan. The balance between the foreground rock and the sky is amazing. Exposure is excellent also in that you retained the color in the reflections on the water. Impressive. Aug 10th
93 Aug 20 Comment Good job Jerry. Considering the heat here in the south west, the shark has the right idea. Definitely need something to cool off. Aug 10th
93 Aug 20 Reply Both. The river exists as a large curve and all the images were taken handheld without leveling the camera which resulted in a "ships prow" effect due to the tilt of the camera. I am also standing on top of about a 30 foot embankment looking down towards the river which exaggerates the effect. I cropped out a lot of the sky to place the horizon line (the top of the mountains) near the center of the image to create a semblance of symmetry between the sky and the foreground.

Using a level tripod and composing along the optical axis of the lens would have eliminated all the curvature but I choose to use resulting curvature of the river to produce a "smile" with the water while keeping it within the frame of the photograph.

Glad you liked it overall. You have a very good eye for detail Jean.

93 Aug 20 Comment Thank you Paul for the praise. Aug 2nd
93 Aug 20 Comment Very nice black & white of the old west as most of us visualize it. Leading line of the fence to the tree which leads my eyes to the clouds in the sky which curves back to the cabin. Well done Paul. Aug 2nd
