Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
93 Feb 21 Comment Hey Darcy, wonderful photo. I love those underwater rocks - This really makes it for me. Be careful with your cloning, particularly on the lower right where the kayak was removed. Any repetitive lines and textures are a dead give-way. As Jeff suggested, dial in a little more contrast. Don't be afraid of pure blacks and white whites. The Curves tool is very easy and effective for this. You will be surprised at how nicely this will make your images pop. Feb 26th

96 Feb 21 Comment Hi Cheryl, I think it's safe to say that the overwhelming consensus is that your main image is the one. I certainly feel that it's the best. I commend you for braving the early morning cold in order to capture an planned out photo. I love the colors and tone. It sets the mood perfectly. I am a stickler about footprints, but in your picture, they don't bother me. I agree with Robert about cropping the right tree out. Other than that, I can't think of anything I would change. You have an eye for seeing interesting subjects and composing your shots wonderfully. It's a very peaceful image with a hint of loneliness. Feb 26th
96 Feb 21 Comment Hey Robert, I always love viewing your images. They are so delicate and have an indescribable graciousness to them. This month's image takes that to an even higher level. The mood is captured in a manner that makes me feel like I'm seeing heaven for the first time. The light fog is pleasing to me as well as the soft light that illuminates the trees. You restrained from not bringing up the brightness globally. This gives just the perfect amount of subtle tension that holds me in.
I took some time to view your original and feel that is a nice composition on its own. Perhaps crop up a little from the bottom, but the fog or mist over the water trailing off to the left is very pleasing too. But, I can see why you formed your image as you did. It brings my attention to the tree area where it is wonderfully lit.
Did you do any kind of Clarity, Detail Extraction, extra sharpening, etc. on the highlighted trees. As I always qualify my reviews questioning the web feed's rendering, this area, as it appears here, feels a little too enhanced. You can see at full resolution if this needs to be dialed back or if it's the website that makes it look this way. I say this because my eyes desperately want to see a consistent soft, heavenly look in the tree area.
You used your color palette very nicely with your photograph. As a complement to your photographic and artist abilities, I'm sure you intentionally worked the predominate blue tones with the complementary warm colors of orange and yellow in the reeds so they show nicely together.
You never stop in impressing me with your high knowledge of photography and your ability to make a very pleasing picture.

96 Feb 21 Comment Hi Emily, projected in your photography is a sense of fun, wonderment and adventure. To me, this makes your images exciting. That is critically important in any form of art - your ability to express who you are through your images. It is something that I have seen in your work from the beginning of my being in this group. I realize this is a conceptual review of your body of work rather than a critical analysis of the detail of this month's picture, which I believe is equally important. Carlos Santana is not an exceptional quitarest because he can play fast and hit all the notes perfectly. He has the rare talent to project his emotion through his guitar. Most of us struggle hard to make that happen. You do such a fine job with this. We can all learn the technology and learn the accepted rules that make a good composition; but, certainly in my case, expressing who we are and what's in our heads that influence our art is very difficult. 96 Feb 21 Comment Hey There Dale. I took a photography workshop where the instructor told me I needed more tension in my images. I had no idea what he meant. I later studied the concept and now when composing a shot, I consider how I can apply or reduce the amount of tension in the image. This is a roundabout way to say that I agree with you. Tension is not a bad thing at all. It all depends on what the imagemaker is trying to say through their photo. Feb 6th
96 Feb 21 Comment Hi Dale, you definitely have captured a serene winter lake. But outside of the lake boundaries there's a bit of tension: The dead, scraggly brush in the foreground; the haphazard prints on the left and the houses on the upper shore. To my eyes, there's too much visual conflict. The geese bring the tension down, but the image feels more like an equipment test (as you indicated) rather than an dedicated effort to make an impactful story.
I tried to re-crop your picture but couldn't find the right framing.
Your processing is very well done with the colors, tones and sharpness all perfect. You are obviously well practiced in LR.

96 Feb 21 Comment Hi Gerard, I definitely see the cold too. The subtle Blue cast gives that feeling. The horizon is also where our imaginations start.
The slight upturn of your left side horizon and the slight downturn of the clouds on the left drive my eyes in that direction. Fortunately you have an element of interest in the telephone polls on the right that balance the composition. To me, it's a pleasing effect.
I find the vehicle tracks in the foreground and the shrubs beneath the polls distracting. I made a crop that eliminates the tracks. That seems to make the horizon stronger. Unfortunately, the sky becomes very dominate which is not what I think your image is about. I'm not thrilled with the crop, but I thought it might help give you some ideas so you can take the shot in your own direction. I also cloned out the shrubs and sensor spots.
