Shirley, this is a lovely tranquil scene. The calm after the storm? I envy you being able to look out over this vista every day.
I like the light fog/mist over the water. It seems to add to the serenity.
Maybe lighten the shadows of the woodland on the far shore to bring out some of the details, and crop the image removing some of the blue sky as Piers has done in his suggestion.
Well done.

Shirley would be pleased to know that in Australia we use the word "footpath" instead of "sidewalk."
I refer to her comment about language differences in my discussion post. |

Thanks Tor,
I am not sure that I am brave enough to venture to that part of town after dark. There are a few "unsavoury" characters lurking around at that time of day |

Thanks Jim,
It is interesting how a new set of eyes can see so much more in an image and from a different perspective.
Thank you |

Both buildings were designed by the same local architectural firm.
The light is coming in from my left. So I am looking south with the sun coming in from the north east.
I will look at darkening the sky as you suggested. When it rains here have "stream showers." They blow in from the west, it rains for ten minutes and then blow through leaving a blue sky until the next one comes through. Probably much like you grew up with in South Africa.

Thanks Karen.
I am probably one of the few local photographers who haven't been inside the "Cheesegrater". Those who have been inside don't seem to get past the spiral staircase. The view from inside would be nearby buildings and the railyards.
The beauty is in the building and not it's surroundings. |

This is a lovely simple composition. It is well seen and has a strong graphic element provided by the lines against the vibrant blue sky. The minimalist approach is effective, leading the viewer's eye directly to the loop created by the cable, which serves as the focal point.
The simplicity of the image is its strength, with the clear blue sky providing a clean backdrop that contrasts well with the lines.
Well done, Tor ... Print this one and put it on the wall.

Karen you have created a simple still life composition with a wonderful blend of textures and warm colours that really bring a classic and almost antique feel to the image. The lighting is soft and directional, which helps to create depth and accentuates the shapes and shadows of the objects. The dark background helps the subjects stand out, and the rustic wood surface adds to the overall charm of the scene.
However, I find the white lace serviette in the foreground of the image out of place. It doesn't seem to add to the story and it's whiteness makes it look as if it comes from another colour palette. It is harsh compared to the rest of the image.
Maybe replace it with another piece of fruit.
Well done

I agree with Karen's comments and I find this a very busy image. My eye eventually rests on the brightest part, which is the end of the stone wall.
I like the variation in the textures with the hard lines of the stonework and the softness of the greenery and flowers.
Maybe a change of angle to make the running water a little more dominant might help to simplify the composition a little and add another dimension to the image.

This is a dynamic nature image showing the patterns and details of plant life. The focus on the tips of the plant is well done considering the shallow depth of field, although some parts are a little soft, but this draws the eye to the gentle curves and repeating shapes.
The bokeh of the background accentuates the subject, providing a pleasing contrast. The lighting enhances the vibrancy of the green hues, and adds to the overall freshness of the image.
Nature photography is not my forte but this image certainly holds my attention.
Well done
