Thank you Jim. After reading your comment I revisited the files from this photo shoot. At the time, I must have been shooting using Auto ISO as the very next frame, taken a fraction of second later was taken at ISO 8000 rather than 12800. Although it was a little underexposed and still a little "grainy" I ran it through Topaz DeNoise AI and it came out with a much better result. Luckily my subject had not moved.
Thank you, this is much better!

It is amazing how camera clubs sometimes force us out of our comfort zones and we end up venturing into places like antique stores that we might not have otherwise gone!
I like this image and you have handled the light well. I am assuming the image was taken using available light and you have done well taking this image. I like the crop that you have done.
I was a little intrigued by the the white keys. A quick Google search led me to believe this machine is circa 1920. Are the keys made of ivory or was plastic used back then? |

This is a great action shot and I agree with all Piers comments. You have cropped out all the distractions so the eye is focused on the horses and it is tack sharp.
Are they running on sand and is this common in the USA? I think most of our horse races are run on turf, unless it is out in the bush somewhere like Birdsville.

I like this image. I like the lines and the shapes. In fact, I actually like the original coloured image a little better. I love that subtle blue and grey mixed with the creamy coloured surroundings.
But as you said when you saw the scene in front of you it, cried out as a mono image. Maybe make it really contrasty (not sure that is a real word) and and apply your artistic license. Something like this maybe? |

Thanks Piers. My eye was certainly caught by the simplicity of the scene and it was only afterwards that the coloured light shades and the lighting made the image stand out for me.
At this early stage I am using the image for Street photography/photojournalism competitions and the rules forbid cloning images. Cropping and light adjustments are the only modifications allowed. So the blue pipe etc will have to stay for the time being. But I agree with your suggestion to remove it for "open" competitions. |

Thank you Shirley.
For memory this room is more of a walkway through to the beer garden at the back of the property and there were no extra booths along the other wall. There may have been menus posted on the wall and that is what he was looking at. I didn't stay for long
