This is wonderful, Nenette! Putting the woman at the bottom center of the frame gives her prominence even though she is a small part of the overall picture. Having the three boats all face the same way creates a "rule of threes" element to the image which contrasts nicely with the large four masted ship and the smaller boat on the right. Your crop works well and monochrome was the perfect choice here. Well-done all around! |

Sheldon,
I love playing with shadows, especially in monochrome. I really like this. Your dead center composition was spot on here, creating a wonderful graphical image. This would print wonderfully. |

Thanks, Murphy! Good to hear from you. We've done a few covered bridges in Oregon over the years and would like to do more. This one was unexpected and demanded our attention. |

Thanks, Melanie. I struggled with the church, brightening it while not being obvious about it. I was probably too careful. |

Thanks, Jack. I do like the darker sky but otherwise agree with you. I did work at brightening the crosses while trying to be too obvious about it.
I go back and forth about that fence. You may be right about removing it. I'm going to try a version without it. |

Thanks, Arik. I've been guilty of dehaze abuse in the past so I've been trying to ease up a bit. I agree that I probably shouldn't have been quite so cautious with this one. |

Emil,
I really like this as-is. I also agree that the original could be worked into an interesting false-color IR image as well. Excellent work! |

Gary, I like the composition and I like your processing here. The underlying image does seem to have pixelation issues, especially around the lighthouse. Not sure if it was an issue with the submitted jpg or what, but it does distract from an otherwise fine image. |

I agree with the others. Terrific processing makes this scene special! |

Jack, another great scene. I do agree that Emil's version is more effective. I would also remove that small squarish black bit in the lower left of the frame. |

Arik,
I love this scene and what you've done with it. I do agree with Gary about the crop, though I think I prefer your processing. |

It's always interesting to come late to a discussion like this in that I can see other people's thoughts and suggestions. I really like your original composition, but found your processing a bit too heavy-handed for my taste. Looking at the various alternatives posted, I really like Emil's version, but felt that it could benefit from more contrast. I took his version and applied a curves adjustment to the overall scene, then another to just the clouds. I then brightened the foliage a small bit. I also cropped it closer to your original. Just a suggestion. |
