Lovely shot Andrew. The image is perfectly cropped, the full height of the spray is visible and the sprays form very pleasing triangles. There is enough detail in the background to identify the environment still leaving the fireboat in a dominant position. Maybe the bright area on the left hand top could be toned down a bit. The image also shows a number of spots that can easily be removed using any post processing software....:) |

Totally agree with Andrew, the "one eyed" look makes the image very special. The beak lines up with the change of colour of the feathers which centres the owl. To make it even better, the lighter feathers form a triangle which is almost in line with the lowest part of the curve of the branch. Not that any of this matters when trying to capture a bird or owl, but it adds to the interest (for me).

What a fantastic shot Laurie. You managed to capture the bird's motion beautifully. All of the bird is in focus and I love the water droplets which add to the motion. The cropping of the image offers space in the direction of the bird's movement. You may be able to sharpen the bird's face and wings a little bit and maybe brighten the outer parts of the wings, but it may not be necessary. It's a great image Laurie. |

Thank you for your kind comments Stephen. It's a very good point about the cloudy sky and sunlit subject. I had not thought of this and will try and remember it in future. On the other hand I have often observed sunlit sceneries with a very dark sky in the background - it occurs naturally, depending on the position of the sun and distribution of clouds.
As to the technical data - I used a Nikon 750, focal length 70mm, ISO 200, f16.
